Padres Editorial: Top 5 Free Agents the Padres Should Pursue
The San Diego Padres attempted to start the season with Wil Myers in centerfield. That experiment went bad fairly quickly for the Friars. Myers showed great effort and physical abilities, but he just lacks the natural instincts required to play that important position, especially in the spacious confines of Petco Park.
Dexter Fowler has shown a decent bat and a solid glove in his career and could be an important upgrade for the Padres. He hit 17 homers last season with 46 RBIs and had a .250 batting average. The 29-year-old switch-hitting outfielder would also give the Padres a much-needed left-handed bat. Fowler has a great eye at the plate and maintains a .363 career on base percentage. He also has 114 career stolen bases.
Fowler will be in high demand this winter. The Cubs will surely make a run at retaining their leadoff man. He made $9.5 million last year in the final year of his arbitration eligibility. He will be looking for a four or five-year deal and should make a little raise on his 2015 salary. I would suspect a deal in the $50-55 million dollar range would secure his services for four or five seasons.
