Scott Kazmir

The need for a left-handed starter is very evident for the San Diego Padres. The team has had only left-hander Robbie Erlin start for them in the past two seasons. He has made a grand total of 14 starts for the Padres in the past two seasons. Erlin only made three starts in 2015 for the Friars and the team needs a southpaw in the rotation very badly.

The current Padres staff has James Shields, Andrew Cashner and Tyson Ross at the top. All three are very similar pitchers and it would benefit the Padres to have someone giving teams a little different look. A left-hander like Kazmir will not be cheap though.

With the explosion of starting pitchers that are available in this winter’s class, the Padres could easily sign Kazmir at a decent price. Cashner is due for free agency after the season so the Padres do have a need to replace him after the season and beyond. Kazmir had a decent year last year splitting it between Oakland and Houston. He went 7-11 with a 4.17 ERA and a 1.208 WHIP. He made $13 million dollars last year and could be in store for a deal around the $40-45 million dollar range for three years.
