This Monday, Aug.28, 2023, an official announcement was made that the United States Women’s National Team will play the Colombia women’s national team for a friendly match at Snapdragon Stadium on Oct. 29.

The game will be part of a two-game series against Colombia, the first game being on Oct. 26 at America First Field in Sandy, Utah.

This will be the first USWNT game in San Diego and will be the second game for the USWNT after a very disappointing run in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The United States was knocked out in the round of 16 of the World Cup via a penalty shootout against Sweden. The U.S. is now in a transitional phase without former head coach Vlatko Andonovski and under the leadership of interim coach Twila Kilgore. San Diego Wave’s Naomi Girma and Alex Morgan were part of the squad and will be at this game at Snapdragon Stadium, abiding any injuries.

Colombia had a very respectable World Cup, losing to England 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the competition. The standout player for the South American team is by far Real Madrid’s Linda Caicedo, who scored two goals and provided an assist in the World Cup.

Women’s soccer is no stranger to San Diego, with the San Diego Wave setting record-breaking crowds in the NWSL. This USWNT game certainly has the potential to set a record attendance at Snapdragon Stadium, the current record being 34,328 spectators for a friendly match between Manchester United and Wrexham.

I'd like this amount to

Soccer games at Snapdragon Stadium have been a success overall, with teams like the Mexico national soccer team, Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United, and the United States men’s national soccer team playing at the Mission Valley Fortress.

Soccer in San Diego is still thriving, even with the recent news that the 2023 USL Championship season will be the San Diego Loyal’s last. There is plenty of soccer to keep on looking forward to heading into the 2025 inaugural MLS season for San Diego FC. There will continue to be plenty of high-profile games in San Diego, with the Copa America and FIFA Club World Cup coming in 2024.

The next game at Snapdragon Stadium will feature the San Diego Wave and Houston Dash this Saturday, Sept.3. USWNT’s Alex Morgan Naomi Girma will be there for the San Diego Wave in what has the potential to be a very entertaining match.
