San Diego State Aztec Football Report
With the Aztecs’ season opener just two weeks away, the teams chemistry and plan is all coming together.
The Aztecs’ project to win their division and compete in the MWC championship game for the third straight year.
Injury Update:
Last Saturday, three Aztecs were diagnosed with chicken pox, including starting offensive lineman Ryan Pope. The others are backup senior linebackers Tyler Morris and Temerick Harper. On Monday the total infected number grew to five when fellow starting offensive lineman Antonio Rosales and wide receiver Fred Trevillion confirmed they also had the pox.
The Aztecs canceled practice Monday to clean and sanitize the weight room and locker room to try and stabilize the outbreak.
Ryan Pope returned to practice on Tuesday, and the team seems to have controlled the outbreak.
Last week starting wide receivers Mikah Holder and Quest Truxton both missed practice due to hamstring injuries.
Meanwhile David Wells has been sidelined with a Jones fracture and isn’t expected to return until the Aztecs’ season opener against UC Davis.
Offensive lineman Nick Gerhard and defensive lineman Connor Mitchell both suffered concussions last week and continue to go through concussion protocol.
Defensive lineman Chibu Onyeukwu isn’t participating in practice with a strained ACL.
Overall, the Aztecs’ health is pretty good, with 90 of 105 players cleared to practice.
Other News:
Last Friday the Aztecs were welcomed by the military and their families at the Marine Corps Air Station on Miramar Sports Complex Field. They took pictures, signed autographs, and played a scrimmage. The Chargers used to headline this event every year, but SDSU has replaced them.
I’d like the Aztecs to do more to support the military in San Diego, much like the Padres, but only so much can be done with a college athletics budget.
On Saturday August 19th, Qualcomm will host FanFest for the Aztecs. It begins at 4:30 pm and admission is free. Attendees can interact with players, play games, enjoy concessions, and watch the Aztecs scrimmage. The first 2,500 fans will receive a free Aztec schedule cup, which can be filled at games for just $3.
Aztecs’ season opener is September 2nd at Qualcomm stadium against UC Davis. Kickoff is at 5:30 pm.
This team has a lot of potential and can make some national noise this year. With the Chargers leaving, get out there and support the hard-working student athletes.
