Charly Kit reveal

San Diego, California

When the San Diego Loyal announced its new partnership with Charly back in January, Loyal President Ricardo Campos said the club wanted to challenge norms and be authentic to the region, all while giving the fans something unique.

The kit launch at Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens in Liberty Station showed that Campos and the Loyal lived up to that promise, and fans showed their appreciation with their cheers and chants and by flooding to the merchandise tent immediately following the presentation.

After a chilling promo video emphasizing the communities in San Diego, the curtain on the stage dropped, and Loyal players stood before the crowd in their new Charly jerseys.

The new Torrey Green home kit includes a topographic map of the San Diego coast. Rocket League, the new front-of-kit sponsor, is in the same Torrey Green inside a rectangle of bars with different hues of orange taken from the Loyal’s crest.

The away kit is primarily white with a gray map of San Diego that wraps around to the back of the jersey with the Rocket League logo displayed in gray on the front.

“You won’t find anything more authentic to our club and community than our 2022 kits,” Campos said. “With our home kits, we finally give Torrey Green it’s shining moment, a promise that we made sure to deliver on for our fans. For our away kits, our club will always take the map of San Diego with them on the road. We thank CHARLY for helping us create true works of art that all San Diegans can be proud of.”

For the goalkeeper kits, the Loyal had to receive special permission from the league to be able to use Rocket League’s graphic logo that includes one of the cars from the game hitting a ball. The jersey comes in two variations, a black with pink accents kit and light blue with black and white accents kit.

Chula Vista native and Loyal goalkeeper Austin Guerrero was on stage wearing the black goalkeeper kit.

“I’m from here, so I look out at the crowd and I see family and friends and it’s extra special for me,” Guerrero said. “The new jerseys are awesome, CHARLY did a great job. Everybody who had a hand in designing teh jerseys did an amazing job and I’m stoked. The attention to detail is great and I can’t wait to be rocking that in the stadium.”

This wasn’t the first time that the Loyal revealed a jersey at the Stone Brewing location. The first time was in February of 2020, before the Loyal’s inaugural season. Lots of fans in attendance on Thursday were also in there for the reveal in 2020, including former Director of Art and Creative for The Locals supporters group and lifelong San Diegan Travis Peterson.

“I was even more excited to see the new kits than I was the first time,” Peterson said. “I love them. The second (away) kit blew my mind. Just looking at it from a distance it looks white and then when you get up close, it’s spectacular.”

On Jan. 18, the Loyal announced a multi-year partnership with the Mexican apparel and footwear brand. CHARLY is the current kit sponsor of popular Liga MX clubs Pachuca, Atlas, Queretaro, Santos Laguna, Club Leon and Club Tijuana Xolos. CHARLY is also the kit sponsor in the popular Netflix series Club de Cuervos.

“San Diego Loyal SC was an obvious choice for our first strategic partnership with a professional soccer club in the United States,” CHARLY USA GM Jason Wells said. “Whether it’s our shared values, rapid growth or passion for innovation our brands were aligned from the start. We’re proud to represent a club that puts its fans first and dares to be different.”

The front-of-kit sponsor is locally developed video game Rocket League. The critically acclaimed video game, developed by Psyonix, will be replacing the Stone Brewing logo that featured on the previous kits. Psyonix is a founding partner of SD Loyal and will become the first video game developer to have a front-of-kit partnership in American professional soccer.

“The partnership with SD Loyal is a natural fit for us as our San Diego based studio knows a thing or two about digital soccer,” said Phil Piliero, VP, Psyonix Co-Studio Head in a statement. “We’re thrilled to expand our partnership with them this season and have Rocket League represented on the front-of-kit.”

The Loyal will debut their new kits in its USL Championship home opener against LA Galaxy II on Saturday, March 12, at Torero Stadium.
