Padres Winter League Report: November 17 (Franchy Homers in D.R. for Walk-off Win)

Peoria beat Salt River 3-2 in the AFL Championship game on Saturday. A walk-off homer in the bottom of tenth gave Peoria its second straight AFL title.
There were several players in action on Saturday around the globe.
Here is a recap of the day’s events:
Arizona Fall League
Buddy Reed– (1-4) BB
The fleet-footed outfielder went 1-for-4 in the championship game. He finishes the AFL season with a .333/.397/.485 batting line while recording a .882 OPS in 17 games and 66 at-bats. Reed really showed a lot this fall as his swing has shortened and he’s making more contact while utilizing the speed element to his game.
Hudson Potts– (0-4) BB, 3 K
The third baseman finished with a .228/.330/.367 slash line. He put up a .697 OPS for the Javelinas in 22 games and 72 at-bats. Potts did strikeout 27 times, which is a bit troubling. Look for him to make further advances in his game next season in Amarillo.
Austin Allen– (1-3) BB, K
He started at DH in the championship game and went 1-for-3. He finishes the AFL season with a .263/.358/.421 batting line. His .779 OPS was impressive as Allen played in 15 games and recorded 57 at-bats. He finishes the year with two home runs and 13 RBI. The left-handed-hitting catcher is very close to major league service time.
Miguel Diaz– 3.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K
In six starts this season in the AFL, Diaz recorded a 4.87 ERA. He threw 20 innings, striking out 19 and walking nine hitters. He was used solely as a starter as the Padres still envision him in that capacity. He was clocked as high as 98 mph on Saturday in the championship game.
Mexican winter league
Christian Villanueva- (1-4) Run, 3 K
Villanueva started as the team’s DH and went 1-for-4 on Saturday for the Yaquis de Obregon.
Venezuelan winter league
Edward Olivares– (0-0) Run
Olivares is at .340 in Venezuela this season. He appeared as a pinch-runner on Saturday and scored a run. He was removed early from the game on Friday, so he might be banged up a little bit. Olivares will need to be added to the 40-man roster soon or risk being drafted in the Rule 5 draft next month.
Gabriel Arias– (0-1) K
Arias was used as a pinch-hitter on Saturday and went 0-for-1. The shortstop is hitting .263 on the season and has made numerous errors. The Padres have to be slightly concerned about his defensive miscues this winter.
Dominican winter league
Franchy Cordero– (1-4) HR, RBI, Run, 3 K
Franchy hit his first home run of the season on Saturday. The outfielder is batting .235 in his first few games in the D.R. for the Leones. His elbow appears to be 100 percent as Cordero has played in three straight games.
Franmil Reyes– (1-3) Run, K
La Mole had an off night on Saturday. He only managed one hit, dropping his average to .444 on the year. He is killing the ball in the D.R. so far, as he has smashed three homers and has put up a 1.199 OPS in 45 at-bats.
Fernando Tatis Jr.– (0-3) K
Fernando Tatis is hitting .200 so far in the Dominican Republic. The young phenom got off to a hot start, but has cooled down in his last few games.
Francisco Mejia– (2-4) K
The catcher has made three starts in the D.R. and is hitting .455. The switch-hitter has a really smooth swing and he should continue to produce this winter.

Puerto Rican winter league
Aldemar Burgos– (2-5) Run, CS
The right-handed-hitting outfielder is hitting .286 on the year in the island of Puerto Rico.
Australian winter league
Michael Gettys– (1-5) 2 K
Gettys is hitting .308 on the year after going 1-for-5 in a doubleheader vs the Brisbane Bandits on Saturday. He struck out twice in the game, which continues to be an issue for the right-handed hitter.
Justin Lopez– (1-7) RBI, 4 K
The young infielder is hitting .273 on the year after going 1-for-7 in a doubleheader on Saturday. He played shortstop in both games.
Kelvin Melean– (1-4) Run
Melean got the start at third base in the second game of the doubleheader and went 1-for-4. He is hitting .125 on the year in Australia.
Jarryd Dale– (3-6) 2B, Run, 2 RBI, BB
The Australian native is hitting .375 on the year after going 3-for-6 in a doubleheader on Saturday.
