Padres Series Recap: Phillies Take Series Against Padres
The San Diego Padres lost two out of three games from the Philadelphia Phillies this weekend. This is the second series against the Phillies which the Padres have lost this season. Overall the Padres are 2-5 on the year against the Phillies. This really comes as a shock since both teams are quite even. Both teams are currently in a rebuilding process. Both also have some similar type of players. The Phillies are definitely more along into their rebuild which could have been the deciding factor in this series. There is something interesting to look at in these two series against the Phillies.
The Padres were a completely different team when they were beaten at Citizens Bank Park. Well now an arguably worse Padres team at Petco played a bit better against the Phillies. The Padres still had some key players in that first series in Philly, but they played horribly and lost three out of four games. Well now at Petco they still lost the series but played much better. The offense was also much better as they scored 18 runs in the series. To put it in perspective the Padres only scored five runs in that first four-game series at Citizens Bank Park. That is really mind-blowing when you look at it. The Padres once again leave me confused as to what expectations I should have from them. All in all this series wasn’t great, but it certainly was not a bad showing.
Game One: Tommy did it
Overall game one of this series was a nice showing by the San Diego Padres. The game would end five runs to four in the Phillies favor though. Christian Friedrich would have a solid day on the mound. He would pitch seven innings and allow four runs on five hits. For the Phillies, Jeremy Hellickson would have a strong outing as he would go six and two-thirds and allow three runs to score. As far as the bullpens go they would both be on par with each other as both would allow only a run to score. Hector Neris would be the man to do so for the Phillies. Jose Dominguez would be the member of the Pads pen which would cave in on Friday night.
As far as the offense goes we would see plenty of action in this game. Jose Rondon would be the one to open up the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. Alex Dickerson would then continue it in the bottom of the third with a sac-fly. Cameron Rupp would be the main run producer of the night for the Phillies. He would have a big night as he would slam a three-run homer in the fourth inning. He would also hit an RBI double in the sixth inning of the game. Overall Rupp would go 2-4 on the game with four RBI. Rupp wouldn’t be the lone player to homer in the game as Alexei Ramirez would homer in the bottom of the seventh. That would make things interesting as the score would then be 4-3. The Phillies however, would extend their lead in the top of the eighth inning. Tommy Joseph would deliver the deciding blow of the game with an RBI single. This would not be the last time he would deliver a deciding run in this series. Wil Myers would deliver the last cry for help for the Padres in the bottom of the eighth. Myers would blast his 21st home run on the year to give us the final score of 5-4. The Padres would fall in this game, but it really would be an exciting game. The Padres would really try their best until the final out. It would really be a solid showing by the team. Overall that is all the Padres need to do for the rest of this season. If they can do that, it will lead to something positive in the future.
Game Two: Remembering Ken Caminiti
The second game of this series would certainly be a special one. Ken Caminiti would be remembered and enshrined into the Padres Hall of Fame. Fittingly enough we would see an offensive showdown which would have made the main man of honor proud. We would see 16 runs scored in this game. Even better we would see at least one run scored in every inning besides the third. We would definitely see quite the slug fest in this one. The Padres would start it off in the first inning of the game. Rookie pitcher, Jake Thompson would be making his MLB debut for the Phillies. The Padres would take full advantage of all the nerves that comes with it. Yangervis Solarte would start it off with an RBI single. Christian Bethancourt would then get himself a three RBI double. The Padres would make it a 4-0 game after the first inning.
The Padres would have quite an inexperienced pitcher of their own in Paul Clemens. Ryan Howard would take him yard in the second inning of the game. Thankfully it would only be a solo-shot and the score would be 4-1 after two. After a third inning with no runs we would pick it back up in the fourth inning. The Phillies would get a couple of runs via an error and a ground out. The score would then be a dangerous 4-3 in the Padres favor. The Padres would make it less of a worry in the fifth inning of the game. Wil Myers would bag himself an RBI double and Ryan Schimpf would bring in a run via a sac-fly. The score would be 6-3 after five innings. Both pitchers would really have a rough go at it in this game. Paul Clemens would only throw four and a third and allow three runs to score. Jake Thompson would definitely have a debut to forget. He would also throw just four and a third but he would allow six earned runs. The offenses would keep on rolling and now attack the respective bullpens. Yangervis Solarte would get himself his second RBI of the game in the sixth inning. He would get himself a two RBI single. The Padres would now enjoy a secure 8-3 lead. Cesar Hernandez would quickly retaliate in the top of the seventh inning. He would get himself an RBI double to make it an 8-4 game. Yangervis Solarte would continue his big day as he would drive in another run in the eighth inning. The score would be a very secure 9-4 game. With a five run lead Brandon Maurer would come in to pitch the ninth inning. He would actually really struggle. Jimmy Paredes would take him deep for a two run homer to make it a 6-9 game . Aaron Altherr would make it even more interesting with an RBI double. The game would be 9-7. Fortunately Maurer would get out of the mess and shut the door on the Phillies. Overall this would be another great showing from the Friars. The pitching was definitely not on point, but the offense would save the day. This would be another exciting game for the San Diego Padres.
Game Three: Tommy does it twice
Game three of this series would be another action packed game. We wouldn’t quite see the amount of runs we saw in game two. But it would still be an exciting game which would keep us attentive. Pitching wise we would still see plenty of problems in this game. Jarred Cosart would be the man on the mound for the Friars. He would not have a nice game as he would allow five runs on 10 hits in five innings. The Phillies Jerad Eickhoff wouldn’t be much better as he would allow five runs in six innings of work. The offense would be back at it again as we would see 11 runs in this game. The Phillies would start it off strong with a solo shot by Odubel Herrera in the first inning. The Padres would not retaliate until the third inning of the game. Travis Jankowski would put the Pads on the scoreboard with an RBI ground out. The Phillies would answer big with a four-run fourth inning. Among the run producers would be pitcher Jerad Eickhoff with an RBI double. The Phillies would lead it 5-1 after the top of the fourth.
Alex Dickerson would bring one back with a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth. The Phillies led 5-2 after four innings. After a quiet fifth the Padres would tie it up in the sixth inning. Alex Dickerson would deliver a sac-fly to drive in Fast Freddy. T he Padres rallied and with the score tied Brad Hand would be the pitcher on the mound. As he always seems to be the pitcher in these situations. Who else but Tommy Joseph would deliver the deciding run of the ballgame. He would drive in Cesar Hernadez with a single to give the Phillies the 6-5 lead. The Phillies pen would hold that lead with Edubray Ramos in the seventh and Hector Neris in the eighth. Then Jeanmar Gomez would come in the ninth and get his 29th save of the season to end the game. Overall this would definitely not be the ideal series but it was certainly not the worst of series either. It was also nice to see Wil Myers get back into a rhythm. He would have a solid series as he would go 6-12 in the series with a couple of RBI. Travis Jankowski was an underrated player in this series as well as he went 6-12 himself. There were several positives throughout the series to help us stray away from the negatives. The baseball was also a pleasure to watch as it was very exciting. Go Padres!
