A fantastic drag bunt single last night by Cory Spangenberg helped ignite the Padres win, but Spangy was injured on the play as he dove head first into the bag. At first it looked as though Spangenberg had injured a finger or wrist, but word came from the clubhouse that it was indeed a leg injury.

The fact Spangenberg removed himself immediately showed that the injury was serious. The Padres had to place the speedy infielder on the D.L. this morning/afternoon as the team cannot afford to be short-handed. Jemile Weeks was recalled from Triple-A El Paso to take Spangenberg’s roster spot. Weeks was not currently on the 40-man roster so another move was made. Buddy Baumann was put on the 60-day D.L., clearing a way for Weeks.

The Padres now have lost both Yangervis Solarte and Cory Spangenberg from the team early in the 2016 season. Solarte is supposedly 7-10 days away from returning. The Padres have suddenly turned mostly right-handed with its lineup and that is not a positive thing for a team that seeks balance.

Weeks will provide the team an offensive weapon at the top of the order. He will likely start on most day for the Padres at second base and could be in store for a decent run. The former Athletic was off to a great start in the Spring. It will be interesting to see how Andy Green utilizes the speedy infielder. He will surely get plenty of at bats in the next few weeks. A leg injury to Spangenberg could be a nagging thing that requires more than a 15-day D.L. trip.
