Another day, another San Diego Padres injury. This time the Padres lose left-handed pitcher Robbie Erlin with an elbow strain. A very tough blow for this young man as he looked poised to take a major stride in his production this year. You really have to feel for Erlin. Hopefully he can return to form and this is just a minor setback.

Leonel Campos was recalled from El Paso and he will take a spot in the bullpen. It will be interesting to see whom the Padres insert into the starting rotation to replace Erlin. Brad Hand is a possibility as is Rule-5 pitcher Luis Perdomo. It is unlikely Tyson Ross returns anytime soon as he recently reported shoulder discomfort once again in his pitching arm. The Padres will need someone to fill the spot for at least the next two weeks. Brandon Morrow is a possibility if he can make it back.

Campos is a hard throwing right handed pitcher. The 28-year-old native Venezuelan has been up each of the last two season with the Padres. He only pitched in one game last year. He had 12 K’s in 7.1 innings pitched so far this year in Triple-A with a 4.91 ERA. He owns a career 4.07 ERA and has struck out 298 batters in his 208 career minor league innings. Control has always been his problem and that is what keeps him from being a major league reliever.

Erlin will be examined in two weeks and the team will see what to do from there. The Padres have really been hit hard so far early in the season with injuries. Yangervis Solarte, Cory Spangenberg and Tyson Ross have all gone down with injuries. The loss of Erlin will force manager Andy Green to be creative when formulating his staff. We will see what direction he goes in filling out the roster.
