In our ongoing effort to bring you a complete coverage of the San Diego Padres, from the minor leagues to Petco Park, we here at EVT bring you Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com for our next podcast.

The 2017 MLB Amateur Draft is weeks away, and the Padres have the third selection.

There are tons of rumors swirling around the team and who they are potentially eyeing. We thought, instead of speculating, let’s get one of the best in the business in regards to the draft, and ask him ourselves who he thinks the Padres will select and more importantly, why.

Jonathan gives us a run down on Hunter Greene, Mackenzie Gore, Kyle Wright and Royce Lewis. Each young player has been connected to the Padres to some degree.

We learn a little bit about each player, but Hunter Greene and his ability is explored in detail. We talk about his offensive skill and what his true calling in the game will be. He can throw up to 100 MPH from the mound, but reports are that his bat alone would make him a first round selection.

The last 11 months for the San Diego Padres, has been a whirlwind in regards to their farm system. A.J. Preller has built a great system seemingly out of nowhere. From the June draft, international market and a few key trades here and there, the Padres now have a top-5 system in the game. We ask Jonathan about the 2016 draft for the Padres, and how he thinks A.J. Preller did with the six picks in the top 85 selections he had. This led to a discussion about Buddy Reed, that was quite fascinating.

The youth of the system is talked about, as Fernando Tatis has been scorching hot. We ask Jonathan about Tatis and also get his view on Luis Urias.

All in all, it was a great conversation, with a knowledgeable individual who has no connection to the team and is free to frankly “tell it like it is”. That is important in the game of baseball. More often than not– players, fans and the front office fall in love with their prospects. Getting an unbiased judgement is always best to determine value.

Thank you for the listen and please let us know if you have any questions or comments. We will return in a few days with another podcast.
