Padres Down on the Farm: September 10 (Sod Poodles & Storm take Game 1 of series/Tri-City forces Game 5)

Three San Diego Padres’ minor league teams are in a championship battle.

Tri-City, Lake Elsinore, and Amarillo are all in the last day of their season.

Here is a recap of the day’s events.

Amarillo Sod Poodles (Won 13-6) up 1-0 in series

The Soddies came back from a late game-tying home run off the bat of Connor Wong to prevail 13-6 in a slugfest. Amarillo totaled 17 hits in the game and was led by Luis Torrens who went 3-for-3 with two doubles. Seven different Sod Poodles’ players recorded multiple hits in the win. Buddy Reed got the scoring started in the third with a solo homer. The Sod Poodles only struck out three times in the game as they battled at the plate. Lake Bachar started the game and was pitching well but had to leave after bunting a ball off his pitching fingers. There are no reports yet on the severity of the injury. Amarillo got the job done as four different pitchers came on to close out the game. Evan Miller got the last three out for the Sod Poodles. Elliot Adhbeck was credited with the win even though he gave up the tying homer to Wong in the 8th.

Lake Elsinore Storm (Won 5-2) up 1-0 in series

The Storm rallied after falling behind 2-0, to a big win in the first game of the best-of-five series. Lake Elsinore won 5-2 in front of a crown of about 1,300 fans. Garrett Richards made his final rehab start of the year and pitched fairly well in the game. He threw 63 pitches and allowed two earned runs on six hits in his four innings of work. He told EVT after the game that if the Padres needed him in five days- he would be ready. Osvaldo Hernandez relieved Richards and he threw the ball well. The lefty allowed only one hit and two walks in three innings of work. Mason Fox pitched the last two innings and earned the win for Lake Elsinore. The Storm took the lead in the 8th inning as Tyler Benson singled in the first run of the inning. After a Tucupita Marcano single and a Xavier Edwards sac-fly, Lake Elsinore had a 5-2 lead which was the final score. Tirso Ornelas, Benson, and Marcano all had two hits in the win.

Tri-City Dust Devils (Won 6-0) series tied 2-2

The Dust Devils got a two-run homer from Matthew Acosta in the second inning and did not look back in a 6-0 win over the Hillsboro Hops. Tri-City ties the best-of-five series at they will play for it all tomorrow night at home. Two 2019 draft picks were very solid tonight for the Dust Devils. Jason Blanchard started the game and the 9th-round pik from Lamar University struck out three in three scoreless frames. Closing out the game was Ethan Elliott, the Padres 10th-round pick from Lincoln Memorial University. He struck out seven batters in his four innings of work. Wen-Hua Sung earned the win pitching in between the two first-year players. Offensively, Acosta and Logan Driscoll lead the way. Driscoll, the Padres 2nd-round pick in June is showing a plus bat at the plate. The two teams will battle tomorrow for the title.
