Padres Down on the Farm: May 30 (Doubleheaders for Chihuahuas, Sod Poodles, & Storm; Gore shines in Lake Elsinore)

Thanks to previous weather conditions, there were three doubleheaders on Thursday.
The minor league teams went (4-3) on the day.
Here is a brief recap of what happened.
Game 1: El Paso Chihuahuas Lost 4-0 (34-19 on the season)
In the first game of the doubleheader, Cal Quantrill cruised through three innings, but trouble found him in the later innings. The first Rainers run came in the fourth inning and two more scored in the fifth inning. The Canadian right-hander pitched 5.2 innings and allowed three runs in total while striking out four. Unfortunately, he got little help from his offense as, despite six hits, the team couldn’t scratch any runs against Jon Niese and the Tacoma bullpen.

Game 2: El Paso Chihuahuas Lost 7-0 (34-20 on the season)
El Paso’s offense continued to flatline in game two of the doubleheader. Only Boog Powell, Matthew Batten, and Michael Gettys got hits against the Rainers’ pitching. Tacoma’s offense, on the other hand, mauled Logan Allen in the short span he was in the game. Allen allowed all seven runs to cross the plate on six hits, two of those hits going for home runs. Eric Yardley allowed two inherited runners to cross the plate in 1.1 innings pitched.

Game 1: Amarillo Sod Poodles Won 4-1 (25-25 on the season)
The Sod Poodles got themselves back up to a .500 winning percentage with a victory in the first game of a doubleheader. A three-run third inning, punctuated by a two-RBI triple from Ivan Castillo who continues to have a solid year at Amarillo. Luis Torrens padded the lead with an RBI double in the sixth inning. The Roughriders, on the other hand, had no answers for Emmanuel Ramirez, who sailed through five shutout innings while striking out five. Michel Baez pitched the final two innings and allowed one run, but still earned the save.

Game 2: Amarillo Sod Poodles Won 3-0 (26-25 on the season)
In an eight-inning “extra inning” game, the Sod Poodles are now a game above .500. Jesse Scholtens halted any kind of offensive production from the RoughRiders, going seven innings and allowing three baserunners while striking out seven. Amarillo didn’t get a run across the plate until the top of the eighth inning when Ivan Castillo scratched an RBI single off of Locke St. John. Wildness from St.John got the other two Amarillo runs in the inning after a walk and a hit batter.

Game 1: Lake Elsinore Storm Won 7-1 (26-25 on the season)
Once again, MacKenzie Gore shined in another start for Lake Elsinore. The first-round pick of the 2017 MLB Draft had a no-hitter broken up in the fifth inning and didn’t allow a run until a seventh-inning home run and struck out nine Giants. He has been demolishing High-A batters, and a call-up to the next level is more than likely. Lake Elsinore came through with the offense as well, as the Storm scored at least one run in every inning except the second inning with Jeisson Rosario driving in three of the seven runs.

Game 2: Lake Elsinore Storm Lost 3-2 (26-26 on the season)
After winning the first game of the doubleheader, the Storm dropped to an even .500 winning percentage. Three pitchers went two innings each, with starter Jean Cosme and Jordan Guerrero allowing one and two runs each to let the Giants take the lead and eventual win. After scoring seven runs in the previous game, Lake Elsinore’s offense went quiet in game two. The only runs to cross the plate came off the bat of Luis Campusano, who hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning and a solo home run in the fourth inning.

Fort Wayne TinCaps Won 1-0 (26-26 on the season)
The Fort Wayne TinCaps only needed one run, but a strong performance from Sam Keating kept the Whitecaps off the board for a shutout win. Keating pitched five innings and gave up three hits and struck out six. The following relievers, Cody Tylers and Henry Henry, pitched two shutout innings each. Fort Wayne got their only run in the third inning when Michael Curry drew a bases-loaded walk to bring Kelvin Melean home. The one run was all Fort Wayne needed to bring themselves back to a .500 record.
