Padres Down on the Farm: May 21 (Urias with three hits, Baez strikes out four in return)

Luis Urias has another multi-hit night while Francisco Mejia records a couple of hits of his own in a rehab game. The lower level affiliates pick up wins and push towards .500 as well.
The Padres minor league affiliates went 2-2 on Tuesday.
Here’s a recap of how the games panned out.
El Paso Chihuahuas (29-16) Lost 10-7
A day after blowing up the scoreboard for 21 runs, the Chihuahuas lost a close fought battle. Dillon Overton had an impressive outing, despite giving up four total earned runs and seven hits. He was able to get through four innings giving up just two runs and five hits while sitting down three by way of the K. It wasn’t until the fifth inning where things started to get rocky for Overton. He struck the first two batters that came to the plate. However, the next man up was issued a free pass. A double and a single later gave the Reno Aces two more runs before he struck out the last batter to end the inning.
Fransisco Mejia had an impressive start back in Triple-A, where he’s rehabbing a left-knee sprain. He crushed the second pitch he saw sending a solo shot over the right-field wall. He also had a two-out single in the third that moved Overton to second base; it was Luis Urias who came to the plate next and brought Overton home with his first hit of the game.
On his next at-bat, Urias sent a one-out solo shot off the right field wall for his second hit and second RBI of the game. In the bottom of the eighth with two outs and guys on first and second base, Urias drove a ground ball single into left field that brought the man on second home for his third hit and third RBI of the game.
Andres Munoz made his Triple-A debut on Tuesday, he allowed just one single and struck out one other batter in 1.0 inning of work. Eric Yardley, who some are saying could be a potential call up this season, came into the game in the top of seventh. He had a 5-4 lead when he took the mound which would quickly be erased. A one-out double was followed by a single allowing Reno to tie the game in the inning.
The following inning was even rougher for Yardley, after getting two quick outs he gave up a single that was followed up by Seth Mejias-Brean‘s third error (you read that correctly) error of the game that put two men on base. That play allowed a single to give Reno the lead. Yardley hit the next batter to load the bases still with two outs. After a mound visit, Yardley gave up a base-clearing double to put Reno on top 9-5 with two outs in the eighth inning. Gerardo Reyes came in to end the inning but not before giving up one more single to give Reno their 10-5 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth. He closed out the game allowing just the one hit that drove in an unearned run and struck out two.

Andres Munoz: 1.0 IP, H, K
Amarillo Sod Poodles (19-24) Lost 6-1
The Sod Poodles lost Andres Munoz to Triple-A but was able to add Padres #7 prospect Michel Baez to fill in the spot left behind by Munoz.
East Village Time’s Austin Hartsfield was in attendance on the night and was able to catch up with Hudson Potts who had a strong 2-3 night at the plate, he also worked a walk and crossed the plate for a run. It was a breakthrough night for Potts who has been hitting a lowly .189 average over the past ten games including tonight
Hartsfield talked to Potts about his approach. “It’s just being patient and still being aggressive. I’m trying to get pitches I can handle and stuff I can drive,” Potts said. Hopefully, tonight can be the start of a turnaround for the 20-year-old 1st round pick (2016). Michel Baez made his Double-A debut, he struck out four, allowed one walk, one hit, and one run throughout two innings of work.

Through a translator, Baez told EVT he felt great tonight. He had “waited for a long time and was very excited about this day,” now he’s ready to keep it going.

Lake Elsinore Storm (21-22) Won 5-3
After three days off, two rainouts and an off day, the Storm looked to continue their path back to .500.
Luis Patino got his third win of the season tonight, he went six strong innings allowing just one hit, two walks, and two earned runs all while striking out six batters.
The Ports got their two runs off of Patino quickly with a bases-loaded walk (2nd of two walks) and a soft ground out to third base. After that, the 19-year-old locked in and sat down 16 Stockton batters in a row before being replaced in the 7th inning.
Estuery Ruiz hit a solo shot in the third inning to put the Storm on the board and started Lake Elsinore’s push for a comeback win.
The next inning, Luis Campusano hit a leadoff double, which was followed by two quick outs. It was Olivier Basabe who hit a two-out two-run jack to the put the Storm on top 3-2 in the fourth.
Ruiz got his second hit of the day in the fifth inning with a leadoff single, followed by a stolen base to put him in scoring position with no outs. A single followed by a Jeisson Rosario groundout brought Ruiz to the plate; a Gabriel Arias sac fly gave the storm their fifth run.

Luis Patino: 6.0 IP, H, 2 BB, 2 ER, 6 K, WIN
Fort Wayne (19-23) Won 1-0
Efrain Contreras took the mound for his eighth start this season, he went six strong innings where he allowed just three hits, no runs, and struck out five batters. The 19-year-old set a season high with six innings pitched today and brought his season ERA down from 4.22 to 3.55.
It was the bottom of the second where TinCaps only offense of the day came; a one-out walk was worked by Lee Solomon (first of three walks on the night) which was later followed by a Juan Fernandez triple to bring him home.
