Padres Down on the Farm: June 28 (Lamet strikes out seven/Patino pitches for LE/Morejon starts in Amarillo)

Dinelson Lamet struck out seven in a rehab assignment while two players recently selected to the MLB Futures Game made starts for their respective teams.

The minor league affiliates for the San Diego Padres went 5-3 today.

Here is a brief recap of today’s action.

El Paso Chihuahuas Won 9-5 (50-30 on the season)

El Paso was buoyed by a four-run first inning en route to their 50th win of the season. Ty France got the scoring going thanks to an RBI double to score Michael Gettys. Jose Pirela and Esteban Quiroz drove in runs as well, and Quiroz came around to score on a wild pitch. Dinelson Lamet made his third start at Triple-A and looked solid, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out seven batters in five innings of work. Andres Munoz appeared after him and pitched two innings of relief, pitching a 1-2-3 sixth inning and striking out two. Both Munoz and Lamet could be making their way to the Major League’s very soon, potentially after the All-Star Break.

Amarillo Sod Poodles Won 6-4 (36-40 on the season)

Adrian Morejon made another short start but showed promise on the day he was named to the Futures Game. With East Village Time’s Austin Hartfield reporting from Hodgetown, Morejon pitched two innings and allowed just an unearned run while throwing 22 of his 30 pitches for strikes. On multiple occasions, Morejon touched 98 MPH on his fastball. Three Sod Poodles hit home runs on the day, including a two-run home run off the bat of Edward Olivares. Luis Torrens had himself a day both behind and at the plate, hitting a home run in the third inning while throwing out three would-be base stealers.

Lake Elsinore Storm Lost 4-3 (41-36 on the season)

The game between the Storm and 66ers took 12 innings to complete, but the game didn’t have a good ending for the Storm. Luis Patino, just recently named to the Futures Game, pitched five innings and allowed two runs while striking out nine batters but earned a no-decision for his efforts. Esteury Ruiz put the Storm on the board with a solo home run in the fourth inning while Luis Campusano hit an RBI single to tie the game. After the Storm took the lead thanks to a wild pitch, the 66ers tied it back up with a run-scoring single against Blake Rogers in the eighth. The game remained tied until the 12th inning when Ryan Vega hit a walk-off single off of Will Headen.

Fort Wayne TinCaps Lost 8-1 (36-40 on the season)

Today’s match against the South Bend Cubs quickly unraveled after Fort Wayne took an early lead in the second inning on a solo home run by Lee Solomon. Sammy Keating got hit hard in the third inning as two walks, four hits, and a sacrifice fly allowed five runs to score. Keating allowed another run to score in the fourth before being pulled from the game with two outs in the fifth inning. Another run was credited to Keating when Austin Smith allowed an inherited runner to score. The TinCaps only got four hits in the game.

Tri-City Dust Devils Lost 9-4 (7-8 on the season)

Jason Reynolds and Felix Minjarez got hit hard in the first two innings as the Dust Devils fell behind 6-0 in the second inning. Reynolds loaded the bases and hit a batter to allow a run in the second. He was pulled quickly, and Minjarez allowed all of the inherited runners to score as well as two runners of his own. Two more unearned runs scored as well as another run that came off of Mason Fox in the ninth inning. Jordy Barley and Tre Carter blasted home runs while Matthew Acosta drew a bases-loaded walk to snag an RBI.

AZL Padres 1 Won 10-3 (7-2 on the season)

The Padres rookie squad in Arizona won thanks to a six-run sixth inning. Despite falling behind early, the Padres retook the lead on Hudson Head‘s run-scoring triple. The fun began in the sixth inning. Luis Paez and Hudson Potts had RBI singles; Chandler Seagle hit an RBI groundout while Victor Nova, in his second at-bat, drew a bases-loaded walk. Nova has gotten off to a scorching start, going 13-for-24 in eight games while 19th-round pick Chris Givens has gone 17-for-39 in nine games with seven extra-base hits and 13 RBIs.

Not to be outdone by the Padres 1 squad, the other AZL Padres squad picked up the win thanks to every starter sans one collecting at least one base hit. The first four batters, in particular, went a combined 6-for-17 with eleven RBIs. Four of those RBIs came courtesy of Angel Solarte, who slapped a three-run triple in the third and an RBI single in the fourth. Junior Perez swatted a two-run home run while Ethan Skender cleared the bases with a triple of his own. The Padres got a great performance from their pitchers as five pitchers combined to strike out 13 batters.

DSL Padres Lost 6-3 (11-13 on the season)

The DSL Padres had the game tied at one run apiece, but the DSL Blue Jays strung together enough hits to take the victory. Luis Crisostomo pitched five innings and allowed four runs on five hits while striking out two. However, three of those four runs scored on home runs off of the Padres’ starter. Wilfredo Tovar continued his hot start to his DSL debut by collecting two hits and an RBI while Reginald Dowston and Willmert Paula collected the other two runs of the game.
