Padres Down on the Farm: June 20 (Gore strikes out nine/Urias shines at the plate/Cantillo K’s 10)

MacKenzie Gore continued to prove why he is a top 5 prospect in baseball while Luis Urias had a torrid day for El Paso.
The minor league affiliates of the San Diego Padres went 5-3 today.
Here is a brief recap of the action.
El Paso Chihuahuas Won 10-4 (45-27 on the season)
Luis Urias was a triple shy of the cycle while all but one Chihuahua got a base hit. El Paso utilized the “opener” strategy with Robert Stock pitching two innings before handing the reigns to Dillon Overton. Overton pitched four solid innings of one-run ball while striking out a batter. The offensive explosion began immediately as Urias blasted his 17th home run of the year in the first inning. Michael Gettys contributed with a solo blast of his own while Aderlin Rodriguez had a quarter of RBIs.

Amarillo Sod Poodles Lost 2-1 (34-37 on the season)
The Sod Poodles tied the game at one run apiece after Peter Van Gansen‘s solo home run in the eighth inning. Unfortunately, the Drillers got two runners on base against Michel Baez, and Gavin Lux hit the walk-off RBI single off of recent call-up Evan Miller to win the game. Gone to waste was a strong performance from Emmanuel Ramirez, who logged seven innings on the mound while allowing an unearned run to score. As a team, the Soddies only collected four hits while going 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position.

Lake Elsinore Storm Won 7-4 (36-33 on the season)
Another day, another great start for MacKenzie Gore. The now third best prospect in baseball according to MLBPipeline, Gore shook off a home run in the first inning to pitch six innings and strikeout nine 66ers to grab his sixth win of the season. Four Inland Empire errors allowed for four unearned runs for the Storm, but Luis Campusano and Eguy Rosario both picked up RBIs for Lake Elsinore. With the start, Gore dropped his ERA to 1.23 while Campusano’s 2-for-4 day pushed his batting average to .320 on the season.

Fort Wayne TinCaps Won 6-0 (34-35 on the season)
The TinCaps shook off any rust they may have had after the All-Star game by scoring six runs in the ninth inning while shutting out the Loons. The main factor in the victory was Joey Cantillo, who pitched six shutout innings and striking out ten Loons while allowing just two hits. A combination of Jose Quezada, Cody Tyler, and Carlos Belen pitched three shutout innings of relief to keep the shutout intact. The TinCaps offense got help in the ninth inning from two Loons errors on a sacrifice bunt. Tucapita Marcano and Lee Solomon got RBI doubles to put the icing on the cake.

Tri-City Dust Devils Won 6-5 (3-4 on the season)
An eighth-inning squeeze bunt off the bat of Reinaldo Ilarraza broke a 5-5 tie and put the Dust Devils ahead for the win. After Jonny Homza tied the game at 2-2, Matthew Acosta staked Tri-City to a three-run lead with a bases-clearing triple in the second inning. Hillsboro refused to go down without a fight and proceeded to tie the game up in the fifth inning off of ninth-round pick Jason Blanchard. The game remained deadlocked until the RBI bunt from Ilarraza, and Deivy Mendez picked up the save after right fielder Tyler Benson threw out the would-be tying run at home.

The AZL Padres 1 have kept up the good times with their third win of the season. First-round pick CJ Abrams continues to see the ball well as he went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple while scoring two of the three runs for the Padres. Osvaldo Hernandez also pitched for the first time this season, tossing two scoreless innings while striking out two batters. Manny Guzman pitched two more scoreless innings and handed the ball to Edgar Martinez, who pitched the remaining five innings of the game for the Padres while punching out seven Brewers.

Unlike the Padres 1 squad, the Padres 2 are still looking for their first victory of the season but weren’t able to secure it today. The Athletics jumped ahead early off of Gabriel Morales as the left-hander allowed three runs in just three innings while striking out three. The Padres rallied for three runs in the sixth inning, starting the scoring spree on a wild pitch. Jarryd Dale brought a run home on a single and came around to score on Taylor Lomack‘s infield single. The A’s eventually took the lead in the bottom half of the inning and held on for the win.

Abismael Paulino made his first start of the season in the Dominican Summer League but took the loss after allowing four runs. The DSL Reds pounced on the 22-year-old in the fourth inning, scratching across two runs before getting two more in the fifth inning. Willmert Paula continued to hit well, going 2-for-3 at the plate and knocked in two of the Padres’ three runs of the game while taking two walks in the game. Jose Velez collected the other run with his RBI single in the sixth inning.
