The San Diego Padres held the #3 overall selection in the 2017 MLB Draft, and there were tons of rumors on who they would select.

Hunter Greene was linked to the team, but when they team picked, he was no longer there.

The Padres had to envision that happening, so they changed gears without batting an eye.

Instead of Hunter Greene, the team landed a quality pitcher by the name of Mackenzie Gore out of a high school in North Carolina.

The left-handed, prep pitcher fell to the Padres, and they wasted no time in selecting him. Prior to the draft, the team was linked to the young man, so this comes as no surprise. We here at EVT had speculated on that selection and sure enough, it happened.

He has unbelievable stuff for a young pitcher and comes with great polish as well, for a high school athlete. You can easily see him ascending through a minor league system fairly quickly, despite his youth.

Take a look at some video of this young man. I know the quality isn’t the best, but you get a decent idea of the stuff he has, and more importantly, how repeatably he goes through his motion.

You will notice the leg kick first off. However, keep an eye on how repeatable his delivery is, despite being “funky”.

Gore has the intangibles to succeed in the Padres’ system and the pick was a nice value one for the team.

In this next video he demonstrates a quality fastball and excellent off-speed pitches.

The Padres are sitting pretty with plenty of pitching depth in the minor league system.

Cal Quantrill, Eric Lauer, Anderson Espinoza, Jacob Nix, Jerry Keel, Logan Allen, Adrian Morejon, Joey Lucchesi, and company provide an excellent nucleus for the team to build upon. Gore is now added to that list of hurlers and the future is bright in San Diego. We will be back soon with some further evaluation of the Padres’ first round selection.

  1. I like this pick. If he stays healthy, he seems certain to rise up. I also hope Greene does well for the Reds and has a great career. I’m shaking my head at the Twins. They should have just taken McKay. I don’t know how you can take a guy at 1 with a question mark for a bat.

  2. GREAT PICK!!!! I am so glad that Preller and Co. didn’t change plans when the Twins “went off the board” and selected Lewis. I now a lot of things need to go right, but this Padre rotation down the road could be electric!! Can we fast forward to pick 39?
