Former SDSU Aztec’ Max Montana Heading To Germany
This past week, it was announced that Max Montana signed to play professional basketball in his father’s homeland, Germany.
Montana signed a two-year contract with the Giessen 46ers of the German Basketball Bundesliga. Holger Hoetzel.
Max Montana’s father was born in Germany and he carries dual citizenship, which made him an attractive player in Europe. Teams in Europe are sometimes limited by the number of non-European players that they can have on the roster. As a German citizen, Montana does not count against that number.
Montana started his college career at Indiana. At the end of his freshman season, he decided to transfer closer to home, Calabasas, California, and chose San Diego State. After redshirting, he averaged 7.7 points in his first year on the Mesa. In his junior year, Montana averaged 6.9 points and 3.0 rebounds in 25 games. Known as a lethal three-point shooter, Montana has the versatility to be productive from anywhere on the court. 46ers head coach Ingo Freyer shares the same assessment.

Montana will join a club who has finished in the middle of the standings over the last couple of years in the Bundesliga. Since being promoted to the first division three years ago, the 46ers have not finished higher than ninth place. The team is building an improved roster and Montana is a player that they feel can make a difference. An opportunity to be an impact player and to play extended minutes should be available in Giessen.
I hope that Montana finds success in his professional career. I am curious to see how his game fits in Germany, however I suspect that he will be able to use height and deadly shooting to his advantage in the Bundesliga. It is good to see Aztecs for Life thrive around the world, and San Diego State will be watching Montana, wishing for his success.
