Down on the Farm: July 30 (Rea Impressive in El Paso, Logan Allen Earns Loss for Missions)

The minor league affiliates for the San Diego Padres were 0-5 on Monday.

El Paso Chihuahuas (58-49) Lost 2-0
A four-game winning streak was snapped Monday as the El Paso bats went ice-cold against Oklahoma City pitching. Colin Rea matched Dodgers’ starter Drew Hutchinson pitch-for-pitch, going five innings of two-hit ball while striking out ten batters and walking two. Unfortunately for Rea, El Paso could not provide any kind of offensive support as they were stifled for a mere five hits and got only two runners in scoring position. The Chihuahuas had the opportunity to tie the game up on back-to-back two-out singles by Francisco Mejia and Franmil Reyes, but with Mejia standing on third base, Brett Nicholas grounded out to the third baseman to end the game.

San Antonio Missions (63-44) Lost 3-0
Much like El Paso, San Antonio’s offense was completely baffled by the opposing pitching, but instead of the five hits that El Paso had, San Antonio picked up two hits and got one runner into scoring position. A two-run first inning that saw a steal of home was enough to straddle Logan Allen with the loss, despite a sterling performance of six innings, one walk, and four strikeouts. Miguel Diaz allowed a single run in the two innings he pitched, giving up four hits and striking out none.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (48-57) Lost 1-0
The definition of a pitcher’s duel, Fort Wayne put on an eerily similar performance to San Antonio, getting two hits and advancing one runner to scoring position. A collective pitching effort from Ben Sheckler, Evan Miller, and Dylan Coleman was tossed to the wayside as the TinCaps bats were as cold as the Arctic, and a single run allowed in the third inning was enough to give the TinCaps their fourth loss in five games. Sheckler was solid in the loss, allowing the single run in five innings while striking out three.

Tri-City Dust Devils (21-24) Lost 11-10
Unlike many of the affiliates above them, Tri-City had a big offensive night that saw them collect ten runs on fifteen hits, yet lose the game thanks to Cole Bellinger allowing eight runs on nine hits in the two innings he pitched. Seven of the fifteen hits went for extra bases, including a two-run home run by Luis Asuncion, a ground-rule double from Tre Carter that scored Olivier Basabe, and a two-run double hit by Michael Curry that brought home Carter and Blake Hunt. The top of the ninth inning saw one last stand by Tri-City, with a RBI single from Basabe and a two-run single from Hunt that brought Tri-City to one run away from the lead, but the rally fizzled out as the next three batters after Hunt went down in quick order to end the game.

The AZL Padres 1 game was suspended due to inclement weather. They will make up the game at a later date.
AZL Padres 2
The AZL Padres 2 game was suspended due to a power incident with the stadium. Yordi Francisco had a two-RBI single. The game will be made up at a later date.
DSL Padres (25-23) Lost 5-4
The DSL Padres came very close to pulling off a walk-off win in extra innings, but their rally was cut short with the tying run on second base. With two outs in the bottom of the tenth, Bryan Torres was able to bring home Juan Garcia, then advance to second on a stolen base. However, a Brandon Valenzuela strikeout ended the game and rally. Torres had the other RBI with a single in the bottom of the fifth inning. Starter Mauricio Rodriguez had a good start, allowing only a single unearned run in five innings pitched, lowering his ERA to 2.27 on the year.
