Down on the Farm: July 24 (Mejia Plays/Logan Allen Continues Dominance in San Antonio)

El Paso Chihuahuas (54-48) Lost 13-1

Starting pitcher Jordan Lyles gave up six earned runs in the first inning alone, and seven total during a rough three inning start. Colin Rea followed up with his best impression of Lyles, allowing six earned runs on twelve hits in 3.1 innings of work. For what it’s worth, the game was played at Colorado Springs — A notoriously friendly hitting environment. Kazuhisa Makita and Jose Castillo pitched the last 1.2 innings without allowing any hits, but the damage was already done. In other news, Francisco Mejia made his organizational debut for the Chihuahuas and had one hit in four at bats with a run scored and a strikeout. His lone base knock was an infield hit on a ground ball to the shortstop. Though it’s unknown whether the pitcher was to be held accountable, or Mejia, there was one stolen base given up while the newly acquired catcher was behind the plate. Shane Peterson knocked in the lone run for El Paso in the top of the sixth inning, and was also the only player in the lineup to have two hits.

San Antonio Missions (60-41) Won 4-3

The Missions won a close game in ten innings versus Corpus Christi on Tuesday night. Logan Allen continued his strong season with another great start, throwing six innings while allowing only one run on five hits with five strikeouts. Leading the offense was Kyle Overstreet, who had two hits to go with two RBI. Leadoff man Buddy Reed was on base twice with a base hit and a walk, also scoring two runs. Josh Naylor walked twice despite not recording a hit, while scoring a run. San Antonio was leading 3-1 in the eighth, when lefty reliever Jason Jester allowed two earned runs that tied the game at three apiece. In the bottom of the tenth inning the Missions had the bases loaded and had a walk off walk by Austin Allen to win the game.

Lake Elsinore Storm (51-52) Lost 8-6

It was a particularly tough start for Reggie Lawson, who gave up eight earned runs on twelve hits while only striking out four during his five innings of work. The final three innings were pitched by Cody Tyler for two innings, and David Bednar for the last one, each with a single strikeout in their outings. Ruddy Giron, Rod Boykin, and Allen Cordoba each hit solo home runs in the loss. Edward Olivares had two hits in four at-bats with an RBI, and Ruddy Giron added three hits, a RBI and two runs scored as the top offensive performers. Rod Boykin is a player that deserves recognition, as he had one hit with two RBI. Overall there was just too much offense from Lancaster for the Storm to overcome in the loss.

Fort Wayne Tincaps (46-53)

The Tincaps had Tuesday night off. They resume play Wednesday night at 4 PM PT with Luis Patiño on the hill in Dayton.

Tri-City Dust Devils (18-21) Lost 12-6

The struggles of righty Cole Bellinger were clear in his outing on Tuesday, as he allowed three earned runs on five hits with five walks. He pitched 4.1 innings before being relieved by Dan Dallas, who promptly gave up four earned runs of his own in his 1.1 innings of duty. A throwing error by second baseman Olivier Basabe cost the team two runs on the play when the error was committed, and another two runs later in the inning as well. Grant Little had two hits in four at-bats with three runs batted in and a walk, while Tre Carter had a hit, run scored, and two RBI with a walk. Dwanya Williams-Sutton also scored two runs with a walk, despite not recording a hit in the contest.

AZL Padres 1 (10-17) & AZL Padres 2 (15-13)

The Arizona Rookie League Affiliates were both off on Tuesday night. They get back to action on Wednesday night at 7 PM PT against one another in Peoria.

DSL Padres (24-19) Won 5-4

Despite having their starter Mauricio Rodriguez only last four innings while allowing four runs, three of which were earned, the DSL Padres prevailed over the DSL Reds on Tuesday. The pitchers who followed him out of the bullpen — Carlos Guarate, Jorge Leo, and Jose Geraldo — threw five shutout innings with a combined seven strikeouts to secure the victory. At the plate, was the only hitter to have two base knocks, while Vladimir Echavarria drove in two runs as the key offensive players in the win. Catcher Brandon Valenzuela had a hit and an RBI as well.
