Tenth Round of Liga MX Matches Postponed as Xolos and League Show Solidarity Towards Earthquake Relief

Terror struck in Mexico City this Tuesday, Sept. 19 as a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit Mexico’s capital causing death and destruction in the city and in neighboring states.

At the time of writing this article, the last reported death toll is at 274 while the endless effort to find survivors throughout the devastation continues.

The Liga MX immediately showed its support to this catastrophe first by suspending all round of 16 Copa MX games, including the clash between Monarcas Morelia and Club Tijuana until October 24 and October 25.

The Liga MX also postponed the 10th round of matches, including the game between Lobos BUAP and Club Tijuana, until Oct. 17 and Oct. 18.

This has allowed most Liga MX teams to use its stadiums as collection centers to send supplies to the victims and rescuers.

The Estadio Caliente officially opened its doors as a collection center this Thursday and raised over 20 tons of supplies after the first day. The whole team has shown support towards the cause with several players donating and helping out at the collection center.

Some players like Gustavo Bou, Joe Corona and Gibran Lajud have also offered their jerseys as prizes to people who donate the most amount of supplies.

The Estadio Caliente will be open as a collection center until Sept.30, Monday to Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. and Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. You can volunteer to help at the collection center by sending an email to [email protected].

The Xolos do not stand alone as the Liga MX has shown solidarity in this cause and has helped a great deal in these few days. Players and coaches across the league have been spotted donating, helping at collection centers and even helping pick up debris. There are several plans by Liga MX teams to raise money for the cause such as friendly matches, training sessions and more.

The Liga MX will resume its normal activities this Tuesday, Sept. 26 as the eleventh round of matches will be played on schedule. The Tijuana Xolos will have a very tough game hosting Tigres UANL at the Estadio Caliente in what should be a very interesting match.
