Yankees Bomb Paddack, Silence Bats as Padres are Shut Out 7-0

The Padres and Yankees played the rubber match of the three-game series in New York. The Friars had their rookie ace Chris Paddack on the mound on extra rest, after he was scratched from Sunday’s start in Toronto. He started opposite James Paxton, who was fresh off of the injured list.
The day did not start well for Paddack as the Yankees scored three runs in the first two innings thanks to solo home runs by DJ LeMahieu, Luke Voit and Gio Urshela. After the second, Paddack settled down and did not allow another hit until the fifth inning. New York got another run home after the bases were loaded and Brett Gardner hit a sacrifice fly to extend their lead to 4-0.
Paddack would be finished after five innings, with four earned runs, one walk and six strikeouts to his name. It certainly was one of the most challenging outings of his brief big league career, in a tough environment as well. This outing was a good learning experience for the young right-hander.
The bullpen for San Diego would not provide any relief, as Adam Warren surrendered three runs, two of which were earned, after allowing a home run by Gleyber Torres.

On the other side of things, Paxton and then the New York bullpen took a no-hitter into the sixth until Wil Myers led off with a single. Nothing became of it as the team struggled mightily at the plate, mustering four hits and going 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position. The only extra-base hit was Austin Allen’s pinch-hit double in the eighth inning.
The Yankees bullpen shut down San Diego and they completed the shutout victory against the Friars, 7-0.
The Padres finished their road trip at 3-3, which is certainly respectable given the tour through two A.L. East cities, with the Yankees being one of the best teams in all of baseball.
With the road trip over, the Padres now head home for an extended homestand after an off-day on Thursday. They start a three-game series with the Marlins on Friday night and Joey Lucchesi is scheduled to take the hill for the Friars.

Tanned Tom says it all very well. San Diego sports has always been very frustrating, however, the Padres are getting closer to contention. I believe Myers is now getting at bats to strengthen his stats so somehow Preller can move him without taking a huge loss. When Cordero is healthy and returns, he should take Margot’s job and when Urias returns, he should take Kinsler’s job. If Preller can acquire Stroman and Lamet comes back healthy, quite possibly we could have a exciting second-half of the season. Hedges has to start hitting and our defense has to tighten up. Keep the faith.
The article makes a good point, that a 3-3 road trip against Toronto and the Yankees is perfectly fine. Most good teams are about .500 on the road, and better at home.
Paddack was even a bit better than his stat line. He left some weak stuff over the heart of the plate and most good ML hitters will kill you when you do that. La Mahieu and Voit qualify.
The bigger problem, of course, is the offense. Yeah Paxton pitched like an ace, and the NYY bullpen is murder, but when you field a lineup with only 2 guys hitting over .250, you’re going to get spanked.
There has been reporting that the club is looking for a TOR pitcher, which would be nice, but we really need to do a bit of roster churning.
Possibilities include:
1) Trading Myers. Who knows if it’s even possible, but if there is any chance, it probably needs to be done this summer. He’s blocking more interesting players. And we’ll need whatever portion of his salary can be saved to afford any pitching upgrade. His wRC+ is back to 104, so it just takes Preller spending Fowler’s money to make this go away. Ever wonder whether Fowler will get an ulcer over spending so much to say goodbye to mistakes?
2) And when Jankowski and Cordero come back, will that be the end of Margot? A wRC+ of 55 speaks of the need to either give up on him or demote him. He’s only 24, but ugh.
3) Each day it gets harder to defend playing Kinsler. His wRC+ is 62. More ugh. At some point, soon, the club will need to promote Urias again, and that should pretty much end Kinsler’s playing time. Even just going with Garcia would be an improvement.
This was excruciating to watch.
