The San Diego Padres’ managerial search is underway, and Jayce Tingler has emerged as a possible candidate, but who is he?

As the MLB playoffs heat up, so does the search for the 20th manager in the history of the San Diego Padres.

Indications are all over the place in regards to what kind of manager the Padres are pursuing. Early on, it was thought that the team would go after an experienced manager because of the failure they endured with Andy Green. In the last week, however, a few non-experienced potential managers have emerged, so it is anyone’s guess who will skipper the team in 2020.

The Padres and their general manager, A.J. Preller, have a tie to the Texas Rangers organization. There are some reports the team is weighing options with Ron Washington, who is highly regarded as a baseball coach. The former Rangers’ manager is on the Braves’ coaching staff currently but does have some baggage associated with his name. He seems like a far-fetched option.

Another name that has been brought up in recent days is that of Rangers’ current Minor League Player Development Field Coordinator, Jayce Tingler. The soon to be 39-year-old coach has held several positions throughout the Rangers organization. And he has done those jobs well. Tingler comes as a very well-respected among his players and is described as a baseball lifer who will motivate players.

Jayce Tingler was drafted in 2003 by the Toronto Blue Jays with their 10th-round pick. The left-handed hitter was a standout his senior year at Missouri. He spent four seasons in the minor leagues between the Blue Jays and Rangers organization, before hanging up the cleats for a coaching job.

In 2007, he started his managerial quest in the Dominican Summer League. Only four years after being drafted, the Missouri native was put in charge of 16-22-year-old international prospects. Tingler is fluent in Spanish and led the Rangers DSL team to three straight first-place finishes compiling a 124-62 overall record on the island. That impressive performance landed him a job in the States, managing the Rangers AZL team in Phoenix for the 2010 season.

He since, spent time with the Rangers at the professional level as a minor league field coordinator. He also roamed the entire minor leagues at one point as a traveling minor league coordinator. Tingler worked with Rougned Odor, Nomar Mazara, and several other Rangers major league players. Being that the coach is bi-lingual, he wore many hats for the team.

In 2018, he spent time with the Rangers’ major league team as their interim bench coach. Currently, he was named a manager in the Dominican Winter League. Jayce Tingler will manage the Leones del Escogido when their play starts later this month. If the Padres want to interview him, their team of officials will need to travel to the Dominican Republic.

There is no question that Tingler has earned his stripes at the minor league and major league level. The young skipper should be given an opportunity sooner or later to be at the helm of a major league team. He checks off a lot of boxes in terms of what a franchise looks for in a potential manager. The Padres general manager, A.J. Preller, is very familiar with Tingler and who he is as a coach. We will see if this “talk” leads to an interview in the coming weeks. One way or another, you have to think the Padres are getting close to that point in the hiring process. Tingler is a name to keep an eye on if the Padres want a young leader at the helm. His embrace of the Spanish language and his passion for the sport would go a long way to motivate the San Diego Padres in 2020 and beyond.

  1. Why are you still a fan if they are such losers, says more about you then them. Tingler will do what he always does ….the best! Give this kid some positive thoughts, it’s fans like you that bring the entire moral of the team and the fans down down down. Turn that frown upside down!!!!

  2. Us Padres Fans are tired of supporting losing because of poor decision-making by the front office, preller is good at finding talented players not coaches. We need “INTERNAL CULTURE CHANGE” we need a manager like Bruce Bochy, he he stated that he is hitting a pause button for a year or two and he would love to have another shot at it. Preller made a mistake by hiring tingler a mistake that will cost him his job in the futur. I hope the owners will step in and take immediate action and the termination of perler and tingler of there jobs at any sign of failure within a year or two and then bring in mr. bochy

  3. Read today where they’re bringing this guy in for a second interview…
    Andy Green 2.0…agreed
Barajas…Slap in the face…seriously? If so he’s too soft to manage.
    Scioscia? NO f’n way!
I like Preller! but this hire would mean he wants a puppet. They will both be fired if it doesn’t work out…guaranteed.

  4. I preferred the comments over the article.

    Green 2.0 for sure.

‘ no question he earned his stripes in the majors’ ?

I still have plenty of questions. Interim bench coaching is not earning your ML stripes. Hire him for player development, or to manage San Antonio.

I would love to see Maddon or Girardi. The other commenters have some great ideas; Showalter is great and I’d rather see Barajas over this guy.

  5. Get a real manager, not someone Preller knows from Texas. This is not about his comfort level, this is about winning. Interview Girardi, Showalter and Maddon.

  6. I’m not happy about this development. Tingler may be a good guy, but that’s not the issue; the issue here is that the Padres *desperately* need to make a statement that they want to win *now*. They need Mike Scioscia, or another proven winner.

  7. Sounds like Andy Green 2.0. Except that Green actually played some major league baseball, while Tingler never got past AA.

Hiring Tingler would be a slap in the face to Rod Barajas, who is a native Spanish speaker, and has an equally impressive record managing young players. It would also outrage the fanbase, that is looking for someone who actually has some experience winning at the major league level.

Hard to imagine the Padres being stupid enough to go in this direction.
