In case you were unaware, Club Tijuana has a women’s team that plays in the highly competitive Liga MX Femenil.

Playoffs are set up in the following manner: There are two groups of eight teams in the league. The top two teams from each group advance to the playoffs that start from the semifinal stage.

Xolos Femenil is in Group 1 of the league with Veracruz, Toluca, Cruz Azul, Pumas UNAM, Club America, Monarcas Morelia, and Pachuca.

All teams in the league have a women’s team with the exception of the two teams from Puebla. (Puebla and Lobos BUAP). The current champions of the Liga MX Femenil are Chivas de Guadalajara, but Club Tijuana does not face them during the regular season in this tournament.

The league is young, only in its second season, but is already receiving a lot of attention and is proving to be as contested as the men’s division.

Veracruz has been the most surprising team so far in the 2018 season, earning two wins in their first two games. Club Tijuana is off to a struggling start.

Xolos Femenil only has a point after the first two matches in the 2018 Clausura tournament. That point came from the border city team’s first game against Monarcas Morelia at home. That game proved to be an exciting 2-2 clash, but Club Tijuana’s most recent match was not quite the same as the team lost 3-0 to Pumas UNAM. The Xolos’ defense, along with goalkeeper Itzel Gonzalez, struggled to keep Pumas’ Daniela Garcia in check, who came away with two goals from the game.

Club Tijuana will need to get back on track in their next game against Toluca at home to stay relevant in the league. It seems exaggerated to say this at the early stages of the tournament, but the way the league is set up, there is very little room for error.

Last season, the four playoff teams from the Liga MX Femenil lost a maximum of two games during the 14-game regular season. This means that if Xolos Femenil aspires to reach the playoffs, there is almost no room for any losses for the rest of the 2018 Clausura season.
