The San Diego Padres appear poised to promote second base prospect Luis Urias from the minor leagues in time for Tuesday’s game against the Seattle Mariners.

Fans of the San Diego Padres have been waiting patiently for “the next wave” to arrive with the major league club. On Aug. 28, one of the team’s best prospects will arrive.

Kevin Acee, Padres beat writer for the San Diego Union-Tribune, tweeted on Aug. 27 that second base prospect Luis Urias will be called up to the Padres.

Urias has spent the entire season in Triple-A El Paso. He is ranked as the Padres’ No. 4 prospect, and is ranked No. 22 in MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 Prospects list.

Urias recorded a .296/.398/.447 triple-slash line with a 127 wRC+ through 120 games with the Chihuahuas. He’s been on a hot streak as of late, hitting .500 over his last 10 games. The second baseman has six multi-hit games in that span.

The Padres have called up several prospects over the past month, but they have all been pitching prospects.

Before Urias, the only position player to be called up was Franmil Reyes. Urias has long been touted as the “second baseman of the future.” During the 2018 season, the position had been held down by Jose Pirela, Cory Spangenberg, and even Christian Villanueva. Urias should be given the majority of the playing time moving forward.

A corresponding move has not yet been announced by the Padres.

Urias joins the Padres ahead of their three-game series against the Mariners.

Calling up the young second baseman should inject some excitement into the Padres fan base. The team sits dead last in the National League with a 50-83 record, and have the third-worst record in the majors.

  1. Stupid move. Should let him stay in EP until after the playoffs. This two weeks or whatever it is isn’t going to make that much of a difference in his development and basically its an “F U” to your top affiliate and its fans.

    1. and before anyone says anything, I’m just as excited to see him in SD as the next guy, but you gotta take everything else into consideration, not just what’s good for the Padres.

      1. What’s this everything else?
So when Mike Trout gets injured and rehabs at their AAA club, the Angels’ GM should keep him there longer than necessary because it would be good for minor league attendance? See how silly that sounds?
Plus, you do know that almost all minor league teams are independently owned, not owned by the big league club, right?
Good players are promoted when the ML club thinks they might be ready, that is all.

        1. I can see the reason why some of you would want Urias to stay in the Minors until their playoff run is over.

Preller did this three years ago with Renfroe, Margot, Hedges, and Asuaje when they were making a playoff run and all four of them were hitting good in the PCL.
