San Diego Padres Top 100 Prospects

The San Diego Padres’ farm system is growing beyond belief presently. With a system so stacked, it was time once again to do a write-up on the teams’ top 100 prospects. Enjoy.

Yes, I did it again.

This is the fourth edition of the EVT top 100 prospect list. The San Diego Padres’ farm system is so deep, doing a top 30 list just does not do it justice.

In making this list, I spoke to numerous prospect writers, baseball professionals, media members, and even the players themselves. I enjoy asking the plethora of players I speak to whom they see as a viable prospect. I enjoy finding out who they recognize as going above and beyond and whom they see as a real professional baseball player on the rise. Some players give me some vital information about things you cannot read anywhere.

The following rankings are pretty loose. A players’ value can rise and fall very quickly each season, so keep that in mind. I try not to get too influenced by outside sources and rely mainly on what I see myself from these players and what I hear from trusted individuals. Some men may not have the numbers presently, but do have the intangibles to succeed.

Worth a mention

Michell Miliano–  RHP  12/22/1999

This right-handed pitcher from the Dominican Republic has a very lively arm. He has had trouble harnessing his gift, and that is worrisome for the Padres. He recorded a 9.21 ERA last year in Arizona, but did strike out 34 batters in 28 innings pitched. At 6-foot-3, he has great size. The Padres will remain patient with Miliano as he does have good stuff when his mechanics are true.

Manny Guzman–  RHP  11/01/1999

This right-handed pitcher has good size and throws the ball very hard. He pitched with two teams last year and recorded a 4.26 ERA and a 1.193 WHIP in 57 innings pitched. The Dominican native is very young and could be a bullpen piece eventually for the team.

Todd Van Steensel- RHP   01/14/1991

Signed in November as a minor league free agent, this right-handed pitcher has had a great year in the ABL this winter. The Australian native is a reliever who has pitched in the Phillies and Twins organizations. He’s made it all the way to Double-A, pitching there last year for the Twins. He saved four games and recorded a 3.07 ERA in 44 innings. He could factor eventually for the Friars.

Martin Carrasco–  RHP  11/22/1999

A right-handed pitcher from Tijuana Mexico, Martin Carrasco has some decent ability. He does not throw hard and needs to add velocity to his game. He throws strikes and has clean mechanics, but needs to get bigger and stronger. He was roughed up last year in Arizona, but could get better in 2019 with some seasoning.

Jarryd Dale–  INF  09/11/2000

Jarryd Dale continues to struggle with the bat, but he is still very young. The Padres would like to see him shorten his swing and make better contact. He has some power, but continues to be a light-hitting infielder. He has the ability to play short, but could be a second baseman moving forward.

Ignacio Feliz– RHP  10/23/1999

Feliz is another decent arm for the Padres who is still a teenager. He posted a 3.00 ERA last year while striking out 54 batters in 45 innings pitched. He has decent size and the Dominican-born pitcher could emerge in time for the team.

100- Aldemar Burgos–  OF  01/23/1997

Burgos is in Puerto Rico this winter and has played well. The right-handed hitter put up a .658 OPS last year and needs to be more selective at the plate. He has some power despite the fact he is not a huge player. He is a corner outfielder, but will need to hit more to keep progressing through the system.

99- Nick Kuzia– RHP  02/07/1996

This right-handed pitcher is someone to keep an eye on. He has a fastball that tops out in the mid-’90s. The pitch has excellent run to it. He also has great command and can spot the pitch to both sides of the plate. If he can refine his offspeed, and continue to develop, he could be a decent prospect for the team.

98- Jack Suwinski–  OF  07/29/1998

This left-handed-hitting outfielder is a bit unheralded. He has spent two years in Fort Wayne, but has improved each season in both his OPS and slugging percentage. He is getting better and is still young enough to become a decent prospect for the team. He has no speed and is a corner outfielder moving forward.

97- Cole Bellinger–  RHP  10/12/1999

Cole Bellinger was roughed up a bit in Tri-City, recording a 5.43 ERA in 54 innings pitched. The 15th round pick in the 2017 draft will need to gain velocity and improve in his mechanics to develop. There is a lot to like with him, but the stuff just isn’t there yet. He is still young enough to figure it out.

96- Diomar Lopez–  RHP   12/15/1996

Lopez is in the need of some consistency with his mechanics. He struggled last year in three different stops, posting a 5.18 ERA and a 1.416 WHIP in 41 innings pitched. The Nicaraguan-born pitcher will look to rebound in 2019. He has a good curve and changeup but needs to refine them. He tops out in the mid 90’s, so velocity is not a problem.

95- Starlin Cordero–  RHP  07/21/1998

This 6-foot-7 Dominican is one of the hardest throwers on the Padres squad. He also has little control and fails to utilize his fastball as a dominating pitch. His secondary is also an issue, but the heater will keep him in the game for a long time. Cordero could be a player if he finds his mechanics. Keep a watchful eye on him.

94- Euriebel Angeles-  INF

This young man has a very quick bat and plus power. He reminds some of Javier Baez, as he has an aggressive approach at the plate from the right side. He can play all over the infield and has displayed a pretty decent arm. He is very young and very raw, but an excellent signing for the team this July in the international market. He will probably play in the DSL or the AZL next year to some degree. He is still very young.

93- Dwanya Williams-Sutton–  OF  07/10/1997

This big right-handed hitter has great power and could be a breakout player in 2019. He has to adjust to professional pitching and cut down on his aggressiveness, but he could be a decent power threat for the franchise. The 5th round pick in 2018 out of East Carolina put up a .720 OPS last year in Arizona.

92- Vladimir Echavarria–  OF  04/12/2000

This speedy infielder/outfielder had a decent year last season in the Dominican Republic. He put up a .714 OPS in 176 at-bats. He is not real big, but does have some power to his right-handed swing. He can play all over the diamond but looks to be a corner outfielder or perhaps a third baseman. He can play shortstop, but does not have the skillset to be a middle infielder.

91- Francisco Lucumi-  RHP

Colombian teenager Francisco Lucumi has a very decent arm. He is already hitting 90 mph+ on the radar gun at a very young age. He has excellent mechanics and a plus ability to adjust. He should make his debut in the States this coming year.
