Padres Winter League Report: November 3 (Reed Dazzles in Fall Stars Game)
During the annual Fall Stars Game in Arizona, Buddy Reed stood out and won the MVP award after a game-tying triple in the ninth for the West squad.
The switch-hitting outfielder later scored the winning run. Miguel Diaz pitched a scoreless inning, looking very comfortable on the mound as well. A very nice performance from the two Padres that participated in the AFL All-Star Game.
There were more players in action on Saturday.

Arizona Fall League
Fall Stars Game
Miguel Diaz- 1 IP, 1 H, K
Diaz really looked good, only giving up a two-strike hit in which he was lazy covering the bag on a ground ball to the first baseman. He struck out Peter Alonso on three straight nasty sliders, which was impressive. The right-handed pitcher has the ability to be very much in the plans for the team, but needs to find consistency with his mechanics.
Buddy Reed- (1-3) 3B, RBI, Run, 2 K’s
Reed was sitting on an o-for-2 night when he came up in the ninth for redemption. He answered the call with a booming drive to right-center field that carried extremely well despite Reed’s off-balance swing. Reed stood at third and celebrated, pointing towards his teammates in the dugout. (Video Below). The ultra-athletic Reed has that type of excitement to his game. He is dangerous with the bat and with his foot speed. He is really starting to develop as a baseball player.

Mexican winter league
Gerardo Reyes- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 K
The Mexican reliever continues to be flawless with his 0.00 ERA in his first eight games. He has struck out seven in that time, walked two, and allowed two base hits. He has a chance to make his name in the major leagues fairly soon.
Venezuelan winter league
Edward Olivares- (2-5) 3B, Run, K
The outfielder continues to play every day and is hitting really well in Venezuela. His average is up to .351 on the year after going 2-for-5 on Saturday. Olivares hasn’t played above single-A, and that could be the Padres’ saving grace from a team selecting him in next month’s Rule 5 draft. The Padres probably will not use a 40-man roster spot on him.
Gabriel Arias- (1-3) BB, K
The teenage infielder is hitting .289 on the year in Venezuela. He has had some issues with his defense, committing five errors already. The Padres would like to see him make the routine play and also cut down on his swing. Arias is still very young and could blossom in the 2019 season.
Dominican winter league
Franmil Reyes- (2-4) 2B, BB, Run, K, Error
La Mole is hitting .333 so far in the D.R. He committed a fielding error in right field on Saturday in his second game in the outfield. He really needs to improve in that area if he wants a legit shot with the Padres. At 23, he has plenty of time to get better with the glove.
