Padres Winter League Report: November 1 (Avila K’s 8 in Venezuela/Peoria Continues AFL Dominance)

Peoria won a close game by the score of 4-2 over Scottsdale in a rare night game for the team. The Javelinas are now 14-6 in the year, which is the best record in all of the AFL.

There were a few other Padres’ minor leaguers in action on Thursday.

Arizona Fall League

Austin Allen-(1-3) 2 RBI, K

Slowly, he is bringing his average up, as the backstop is now hitting .282 on the year. He has shown plus power and improved defense. He will surely be added to the 40-man roster in the coming weeks prior to the Rule 5 draft.

Hudson Potts– (0-3) BB, 3 K

The young infielder is struggling a bit as he is at .218 for the year now after an 0-for-3 day at the plate. Potts might just be burned out at this point and likely needs a rest. He enjoys playing every day and that may have gotten the best of him in this first year of extended at-bats.

Buddy Reed– (1-4) 2B, K

The team’s lone offensive representative in Saturday’s Fall Stars Game is hitting .375 on the year. Reed is showing a great eye at the plate and plus defense on the field for the Javelinas.

Travis Radke– 3 IP, 1 BB, 1 H, 3 K

The left-handed pitcher has enjoyed a decent year in the AFL with a 2.25 ERA for Peoria. He does not throw hard, but attacks hitters with various pitches and is very aggressive. There is a lot to like about the way Radke pitches.

Gabriel Arias– (1-2) 2 Runs, BB

The shortstop committed two errors on Thursday and now has five in the year for his winter league team. The defensive ability is there for him to make the spectacular play, but he is struggling with the routine plays. You need to factor his age, as Arias is still a teenager. Consistency should come in time.

Pedro Avila– 5.1 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K (82 pitches-56 strikes)

He needs to be protected in the upcoming Rule 5 draft, and Avila is making a case for it. He has a 0.59 ERA for the Bravos de Margarita after throwing 5.1 innings of one-hit ball on Thursday. The curveball specialist is a sleeper in the Padres’ deep system.

Edward Olivares– (2-4) 2 RBI, BB

Olivares also needs to be added to the 40-man in the coming weeks or risk being claimed by another team. He is hitting .298 so far in Venezuela and has played all three outfield spots.
