The Padres have called up 22 year-old lefty Logan Allen

With the Padres pitching staff in dire need of reinforcements after a historically poor performance in Denver, the Padres have called up Logan Allen to make his major league debut.

The 22 year-old Floridian has been pitching in Triple-A much of the past two seasons.

This year, in 13 starts for Triple-A El Paso, it has been an up-and-down ride for Allen, with a 5.15 ERA while walking 3.4 batters per nine innings.

However, since May 1, his numbers have improved considerably, with a 3.82 ERA and 4.11 FIP in those eight starts.

Allen was an eighth round pick in 2015 by the Boston Red Sox before being dealt to San Diego in the deal that sent Craig Kimbrel to Boston. He is currently ranked by MLB Pipeline as the Padres’ fifth-best prospect and is ranked 61st overall in Minor League Baseball.

Allen boosts a starting rotation that has been hit hard with innings limits, poor performances, bumps and bruises.

Allen’s fastball stays in the low to mid-90s and he has a plus changeup with a slider that is developing into a solid third pitch. He occasionally mixes in a curveball as well. Since being dealt to the Padres organization, Allen has started 75 games over six levels, posting a 3.20 ERA with 9.5 strikeouts per nine innings and a solid 3.51 FIP.

This Padres pitching staff is searching for answers as the staff as a whole is 19th in team ERA.

It is expected that Logan Allen will make his debut and start Tuesday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers.

  1. Apparently the Padres have had TWO 4:1 trade debacles with Boston. Both times they turned a massive trade chip (Kimbrel; Gonzales) into ……. nothing. Or, at least with A-Gone, worst than nothing. They then turned around a turned an all-star (Rizzo) into a fringe-ish pitcher (Cashner). It still bothers me that the guy that made that trade (gifting Rizzo to the Cubs) then goes to work for the Cubs.

[A bonus trade debacle with the Red Sox was also turning their best trade chip (Pomeranz) into a double-TJ victim, who may or may not become valuable……but, statistically speaking, likely will not.]

  2. If Allen fails the overall failure of the Gonzales trade will be fulfilled. All four players will be busts.

    1. The Kimbrel trade. But yeah, Guerra and Asuaje are gone, and Margot is “hitting” for a wRC+ of 59. It’s down to Allen now.

      1. Javy Guerra is not gone. He is trying to reinvent himself as a pitcher and so far the returns have been good. Don’t count him out just yet.
