Padres Spring Training Wrap-Up: Day 2 (Talk of Hosmer Still Lingering)
The smell of the freshly cut grass is in the air. Spring training is finally here as it is time to think Padres baseball and the 2018 season.
As the pop of the glove grows more intense, the feelings of uncertainty still grip this Padre team.
There are several unanswered questions and a huge question that nobody seems to want to discuss.
Eric Hosmer is still rumored to be flirting with the Padres, as there were reports early Thursday morning from Kansas City that the Padres have offered eight years to Hosmer. These statements were quickly recanted, but yet you have to figure- where there is smoke, there is surely fire.
It is no secret that the Padres do indeed covet Hosmer, but what would be the cost? And is that cost beneficial to the team?
Bringing in Hosmer would have a trickle-down effect throughout the team. Wil Myers would immediately move to left field, which would probably move Jose Pirela in a competition at second base with Carlos Asuaje. Pirela hasn’t played second in a long time, and Myers hasn’t played the outfield consistently for two years. These are things that need to be resolved, and doing so in a hurry would only be productive for the team.
Hosmer is potentially holding things up, as the Padres will carry on as though he is not on the roster. Myers will continue to play first and Pirela will work solely in the outfield. Tick Tock, Tick Tock, Mr. Boras. Make a decision already.
Players are trickling into camp as the Padres begin to gather in Peoria. The next few weeks will be full of workouts for the players as they prepare for the grind of the major/minor league season, which is near. Here are some things of interest from Thursday’s camp:

A.J. Ellis signed his minor league contract and will wear #8 in camp

The Padres should look to unload Myers this season if he continues his enigmatic play.
Who would take him? No one. The Padres would have to pay $60 million +/- just to get another team to take him. And in a year or two they would have to pay $100 million or so to dump Hosmer. Hopefully they will only have to pay about $10 million to dump Headley. How many millions of Jed Gyorko’s contract are they still paying, and Shields, and Kemp’s, and are they still paying for Upton? At least they are not paying for Panda! Yay!
