Padres Roster Moves- Morejon, Castillo, Patino and Cantillo

It was a busy day for the San Diego Padres, as Adrian Morejon was IL’d by the team. Jose Castillo was recalled from a rehab assignment to take his roster spot. Joey Cantillo and Luis Patino were also promoted to the next level in their quest to make it to Petco Park.
The San Diego Padres are back home and made a few roster moves.
The major league team placed rookie, left-handed pitcher Adrian Morejon on the 10-day IL with a shoulder issue. Morejon has had a history of arm issues, and this is a bit troubling to the Padres. Hopefully, it is nothing more than fatigue for the 20-year-old.
Jose Castillo was promoted from the 60-day IL to the major league roster replacing Morejon. Castillo battled elbow issues the whole year and has yet to make his debut with the Padres in 2019. The hard-throwing lefty with a terrific slider will be a considerable addition to the team if he can prove his health.
Down on the farm, the Padres continue to be aggressive with their prized young prospects. Both Luis Patino and Joey Cantillo were promoted to the next level on Wednesday night.
Patino will report to Amarillo and be teamed once again with his best friend, MacKenzie Gore. The right-handed Colombian pitcher was dominant for the Lake Elsinore Storm this season, going 6-8 with a 2.69 ERA and a 1.092 WHIP in the Cal League which is known for being a hitters haven. The 19-year-old struck out 113 batters in 87 innings pitched, flashing a fastball that tops out at 99 mph.
Joey Cantilo, a 19-year-old left-handed pitcher from Hawaii, has been spectacular in the Midwest League this season. Cantillo was 9-3 with a 1.93 ERA for the TinCaps and will now head west to California to take Patino’s spot on the roster. Cantillo has shown an increase in velocity over his last few starts. The lefty is a pitcher that usually sits in the high 80s, but if he can continually throw 92-94 mph, then the Padres could have a real treat.
Both young pitchers are approaching their innings limits for the season. It is not clear exactly how much pitching they will be able to do for their respected teams for the completion of the 2019 season.
