Baseball games in Denver usually result in a high scoring affair.

On Friday, the Padres and Rockies battled in a game that was not short of offensive output. The two teams totaled 23 hits and 18 runs as the Rockies were victorious 10-8.

Joey Lucchesi started the game for San Diego, and he was knocked around. The left-hander gave up eight earned runs, and nine hits in 3 2/3 innings pitched for the Padres. He struck out only two batters in his 45-pitch effort. Lucchesi’s ERA ballooned to 4.22 on the year after the start. “His sinker wasn’t sinking very well tonight,” Andy Green said after the game.

The Padres bullpen was able to keep Colorado contained for the most part as Eric Yardley, Craig Stammen, Matt Strahm, and Michel Baez only allowed two earned runs in 4 1/3 innings of work. Stammen allowed a homer to Trevor Story, his second of the night, in the 6th inning. Baez allowed a run as he got a little wild in the bottom of the 8th for the Padres.

Offensively, the Padres got a homer from Austin Hedges as he went 1-for-2 on the night. Josh Naylor, Luis Urias, and Wil Myers all recorded two hits in the loss. Manny Machado continues to struggle as he went 0-f0r-3 in the game with to walks. Machado is hitting .208 on his last 15 games and, .224 in his last 30 games played.  His OPS is down to .794 on the season. Eric Hosmer went 0-for-4 with an RBI as he continues to struggle. He is hitting .246 in his last 25 games, and his OPS is down to .763 on the season. To put that into perspective, Myers has a .746 OPS after today’s game.

The Padres went 5-for-13 with runners in scoring position on Friday but failed to get the big hit when they needed it. “Overall a good fight from the guys,” Green said in response to his team not getting the big hit.

Game number two of the series will be on Saturday, as Eric Lauer (8-6 4.41 ERA) will go against Peter Lambert (2-6 6.86 ERA).

5:40 game time.

  1. According to ESPN Hosmer has a 0.2 WAR… ZERO…point…TWO

Last year he was at 1.4, and some were in an uproar then, but no one is saying much now. And only 6 more years of having perhaps the worst starting first basemen in baseball bat cleanup for the Pads.

So, for those who are keeping score at home, Hosmer is producing 0.1 WAR per $10 million. And AJ is still considered a genius, and has no concerns about losing his job.
