The San Diego Padres have inquired about Pittsburgh Pirates All-Star outfielder Bryan Reynolds.

For some reason, the Padres have been relatively quiet this time around. They missed out on the big names and haven’t made a blockbuster trade like so many have become accustomed to ever since general manager A.J. Preller took over.

Besides the trades for Luke Voit and Matt Beaty, not much else has materialized. Well, that could change soon.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Padres have discussed a trade involving Pirates outfielder Bryan Reynolds.

The Padres desperately need another outfielder, and if the season began right now, it would most like be Jurickson Profar as the starting left-fielder. So, it’s no secret that Reynolds would be an enormous upgrade and bring another talented offensive presence to the lineup.

Reynolds shined in 2021 in Pittsburgh and posted career-highs in a number of categories, including home runs (24), RBIs (90), runs (93), and hits (169). He posted a .302 batting average and was a fixture on a below-average Pirates team.

As Nightengale mentions, the Padres have a ton of pitching depth, and both Chris Paddack and Ryan Weathers were names floating around in a potential trade package.

With the signing of Nick Martinez and a strong showing so far in Spring Training, he could begin the year as the fifth starter, which would make one or both of Weathers and Paddack expendable.

If a deal gets done remains to be seen, but Preller and manager Bob Melvin have to be concerned about the lack of depth in the outfield.

It is worth noting that Reynolds wasn’t on the field with the Pirates during Spring Training.

It could be nothing, but the timing of Nightengale’s report and Reynolds’ absence sure make for an interesting time. With MLB Opening Day right around the corner, Preller and the Padres are running out of days to make a blockbuster deal.

    1. Not a contender with this Outfield and questionable starting pitching health and a head case in Blake Snell. Another horrible trade by AJ.
