Padres Down on the Farm: May 28 (Luis Patino, Gabe Mosser & Miguel Diaz All Pitch Well)

San Diego Padres affiliates were 3-2 in their games on Tuesday.

Here’s a recap of the day’s games:

El Paso Chihuahuas (34-18) Won 4-1

In yet another strong offensive performance, the Chihuahuas beat Fresno behind twelve hits and six walks while only striking out six times as a team. Led by Luis Urías, the team also benefited from Jason Vosler and Michael Gettys‘ big days at the plate. The latter two players each had a couple of hits with a run scored. Francisco Mejía added two hits with a walk as he continued his rehab assignment with El Paso. On the mound, Kyle McGrath took the ball for the Chihuahuas and threw four innings of one-run ball. He was followed by Paco Rodríguez as well as Andres Muñoz, who combined to strike out four batters while only walking one across three innings. Then Fernando Rodriguez Jr. came in for the final two innings to finish the job for El Paso and secure the win. He only allowed a single hit and run, with one walk in finishing the game.

Amarillo Sod Poodles (24-25) Lost 3-1

Starter Miguel Diaz threw well for the Sod Poodles on Tuesday, only allowing two earned runs on three hits and three walks along with nine strikeouts. Blake Rogers allowed the third run in his two innings of work, walking two batters and striking out none. After the pitchers mentioned above were taken out, Dauris Valdez pitched a clean eighth inning with a strikeout and no walks. Amarillo’s offense only managed four hits on the day, which came from Ivan Castillo, Luis Torrens, Kyle Overstreet, and Buddy Reed. Hudson Potts scored the team’s lone run in the loss to Frisco. Leaving fourteen runners on base while striking out ten times as a team was ultimately too much for the team to overcome on Tuesday.

Lake Elsinore Storm (25-24)

Game 1 ( Won 3-1)

Taking the ball for the Storm in their game against Rancho Cucamonga was Luis Patiño, who hurled 5.1 shutout innings with seven strikeouts. This lowered his season ERA to 3.05, and he handed the ball off to Evan Miller for the final 1.2 frames. Miller allowed a run on one hit with three strikeouts to earn the save in the opening game of the doubleheader. Offensively, the Storm had nine hits and only struck out two times throughout the seven-inning game. They were lead by Luis Campusano, who had two hits, two RBI and a run scored. Allen Cordoba knocked in the third run scored by Lake Elsinore.

Game 2 (Lost 1-0)

The second game of the doubleheader saw Ronald Bolaños take the ball for the Storm, and he pitched five strong innings while only allowing a single hit and run. He walked two and struck out five, with the only run being scored on a home run. The bullpen pitched two clean innings with three strikeouts and only one walk in relief of Bolaños. Lake Elsinore’s lineup was very underwhelming in the game, only managing a single hit and striking out seven times. That lone hit came from Luis Campusano, who also walked once to lead the team offensively in the contest. Nate Easley walked twice, as the only other Storm player to do anything of note in the batter’s box. The team had very strong pitching, but simply no offense to back them up in the second game versus Rancho Cucamonga.

Fort Wayne Tincaps (24-25) Won 5-4

It’s impossible not to discuss Xavier Edwards first, as the young shortstop hit well yet again on Tuesday. He went 1-3 with a walk and two runs scored, raising his season batting average to .377 in 2019. Other notable offensive performers included Agustin Ruiz and Michael Curry, who combined for three hits with two RBIs each. Blake Hunt also played well, racking up three hits in four at-bats with a run scored. Gabe Mosser was the TinCaps’ starter, hurling six innings of one-run ball while striking out eight and only walking one. Carlos Belen earned the save for the TinCaps, striking out one hitter for his third save of the year. The twelve strikeouts and only three walks issued by the Fort Wayne pitching staff were the primary reason why the team won on Tuesday, along with some solid contributions from a few position players.
