Padres Down on the Farm: May 24 (Zunica walk-off in Amarillo/Logan Allen 10 K’s for El Paso/Gore Dominant Again)

San Diego Padres affiliates were 3-1 on Friday.
Here is a recap of the day’s events.
El Paso Chihuahuas (31-17) Won 4-1
Logan Allen was a man on a mission the day after his 22nd birthday. The left-hander threw seven innings and only allowed a solo home run off the bat of Wyatt Mathisen. He struck out 10 in the game and looked great showcasing great command of multiple pitches. He could be at Petco Park at some point very soon. El Paso cruised to a 4-1 win in the game. All four runs for El Paso were scored in the first inning. Matt Batten slugged a homer and walked in the contest. Francisco Mejia went 1-for-3 and continues to look healthy behind the dish. Gerardo Reyes and Eric Yardley threw scoreless innings in the game out of the bullpen for the Chihuahuas.

Amarillo Sod Poodles (22-25) Won 10-8
The Soddies continue to play great baseball as the team walked-off against Midland on Friday night by the score of 10-8. Brad Zunica smashed an opposite-field home run for the win. It was the first baseman’s third extra-base hit of the night. Zunica is up to 10 homers on the year in the Texas League. “Feels good to be swinging it well and doing my part to help this team win. Looking forward to a fun summer,” Zunica told EVT after the game.

Nick Margevicius made a start in Amarillo and was held to just two innings by design. The team is electing to bring him on slowly in the minor leagues. He is working on some mechanical stuff and will surely be relied upon at some point in 2019. Jesse Scholtens relieved Margevicius and threw 4.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits. Travis Radke continues to show a lot of moxie as he lowered his ERA to 1.84 on the season. The lefty attacks hitters relentlessly despite not being blessed with a mid 90’s fastball. David Bednar blew a save in the ninth for Amarillo. He allowed a hit, walked three batters and recorded only one out on the night. Amarillo powered 14 hits and ten runs in the win on Friday. Five different Sod Poodles’ hitters recorded a multiple hit game as every hitter in the starting lineup earned a hit except for Buddy Reed who walked twice in an 0-for-1 game.

Lake Elsinore Storm (23-22) Won 8-2
Storm’ ace MacKenzie Gore was on the mound in Modesto for the Storm. He continued his dominance by throwing five innings and only allowing a single run on two hits. He struck out six in the game and walked two in the 80-pitch effort. His ERA is down to 1.15 on the year. The Storm cruised to an 8-2 win as every batter but two recorded a hit in the game. Tirso Ornelas drove in two runs, and so did Jeisson Rosario who had been struggling with the bat. The Storm struck out 14 times in the game. Jack Suwinski and Gabriel Arias each K’d three times in the win.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (21-24) Lost 7-0
After sweeping the South Bend Cubs in a four-game series, the TinCaps went on the road and laid an egg in Great Lakes, losing 7-0. Sam Keating was knocked around, allowing five runs in the first. He only managed to go 1.2 innings in the game and allowed six earned runs. Adrain Martinez relieved him and did well for three innings, only allowing an earned run. Fort Wayne totaled four hits in the game, and Xavier Edwards had two of them. Austin Smith pitched two scoreless innings to end the game, lowering his ERA to 3.27 on the year. Carlos Belen was also perfect for Fort Wayne in 1.1 innings pitched.
