Padres Down on the Farm: May 13 (Luis Urias Homers Again/Morejon Returns/Patino Starts)

El Paso Chihuahuas (26-12) Won 5-3 in Sacramento
The Chihuahuas continue to play well as they beat Sacramento by the score of 5-3 on Monday. Cal Quantrill got the start and earned the win in the game going five innings on 82 pitches. He struck out five in the game and scattered eight hits. Francisco Rodriguez Jr. relieved Quantrill and threw three perfect innings, striking out four. Tyler Higgins earned his second save of the year by pitching the ninth. He could be an option for the Padres eventually in 2019. Offensively, the Chihuahuas got yet another homer from second baseman Luis Urias. The third inning blast was his 11th of the season. His OPS is up to 1.269 on the season, and even the hardiest of Ian Kinsler supporters are getting antsy.

Amarillo Sod Poodles (14-21) Lost 9-8 to Midland
Midland scored three late runs off Kazuhisa Makita in the ninth to take game one of the three-game set against the Soddies. The Japanese reliever committed a costly throwing error in the inning. The 8-7 loss was heartbreaking, as Amarillo looked poised to earn the victory. Adrian Morejon made a start and went two innings for Amarillo. The left-hander had been shelved with an arm issue but looked healthy, recording five strikeouts in the game. Buddy Reed changed his number before the game from #1 to #7 and the switch-hitter went 4-for-4 with his new number as he looks to get his swing back. Owen Miller also recorded four hits on the night for the Sod Poodles. Newly promoted outfielder Taylor Kohlwey homered in the game for Amarillo. The Soddies left nine men on base in the contest after knocking out 16 total hits in the game.

Lake Elsinore Storm (17-21) Lost 2-0 in Stockton
The Storm were almost no-hit on Monday as Brady Feigl had a no-hit game going into the seventh inning tonight in Stockton. Luis Campusano singled to right in the seventh to break up the no-no with one out. Lake Elsinore just did not have a good game offensively as they finished with just two hits and two walks in the game. Luis Patino made the star and was good but, with no offense, he was saddled with the loss and is now 2-4 on the year. Patino went six innings and struck out seven while allowing two earned runs to score. Trevor Megill and Evan Miller threw perfect innings of relief in the game for the Storm.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (15-20) Lost 4-3 in Lake County
Ramon Perez was wild in and out of the strike zone as the TinCaps lost 4-3 to the Captains. The left-handed pitcher is now 0-2 on the season after allowing four earned runs in four innings pitched. He walked five in the game. The TinCaps are struggling offensively right now. Blake Hunt is now hitting .198 after an 0-for-4 day at the plate. He has been hitting the ball right at people, so you figure the numbers will turn around for the catcher. Tucupita Marcano and Xavier Edwards are doing a decent job of getting on base for the TinCaps’ top of the order. Left-handed hitter outfielder Agustin Ruiz continues to hit the ball well as he went 1-for-4 in the game. Austin Smith and Henry Henry pitched in relief of Perez and were both solid. Each pitcher tossed two innings of baseball without allowing a run. Smith has now had two straight solid outings since joining the TinCaps out of extended.

Tucu and X-Ed deserve a ton of credit on that team. 2 of the youngest guys in the league with a .366 and .426! OBP is great. With their speed, the only thing lacking is more doubles but obviously don’t want to mess with a good thing.
Anyone worried that X-Ed went from a 10-1 SB/CS rate to a 10-7? He’s moving up in levels so maybe an acclimation period on that end of things? Tucu is 4-5 in that regard so far (oof).
Does anyone know Urias’ service time? He was up at the end of last season, and at the beginning this year, so he has accumulated a certain amount of games played, which goes toward his arbitration eligibility. So, at what point this year (if he is still in the minors) would the Padres gain that extra year? This could be the final factor in deciding when to bring him up.
The Padres have shown no interest in playing service time games. The main factor may well be if the Padres can move Kinsler, and when.
