Padres Down on the Farm: June 21 (Gettys homers/Weathers pitches for TinCaps/Castillo still hitting for Soddies)

With a full day of games, San Diego Padres’ affiliates went 3-5 on Friday.
Here is a recap of the day’s events.
El Paso Chihuahuas (45-28) Lost 6-5
Second baseman Luis Urias recorded only a bunt single on the night in Tacoma in a rare off night with the bat. He struck out three times and went 1-for-5 for El Paso as the team lost 6-5 to the Rainiers. Miguel Diaz made a start and went 1.2 innings of scoreless ball. He was relieved by Paco Rodriguez in the second, but Dietrich Enns was called upon to go deep into the game. The lefty went five innings and allowed six earned runs for El Paso, earning the loss. Michael Gettys hit his 17th homer of the year in the win and has a .790 OPS. Aderlin Rodriguez slugged his third homer of the season in the fourth inning. Boog Powell went 2-for-4 and scored a run.

Amarillo Sod Poodles (35-37) Won 4-3
Blake Rogers pitched well tonight for Amarillo in their 4-3 win over the Drillers on Friday. He threw four innings allowing only two hits on the night. Nick Kuzia relieved him and tossed three innings for the win in Tulsa. Ivan Castillo continues to be impressive as he went 2-for-4 with a homer. The switch-hitter played left field and has a .878 OPS so far in the Texas League. Owen Miller hit a homer in the game, his eighth of the year and his OPS is up to .824 on the year. David Bednar earned his fourth save of the year, pitching two innings of relief for Amarillo. Bednar could eventually factor in the plans for the Padres bullpen.

Lake Elsinore Storm (37-33) Won 6-3
The Lake Elsinore Storm won the second game of their series with the Inland Empire 66ers by the score of 6-3. Reiss Knehr was on the mound and went the first five innings, allowing three earned runs. Jack Suwinski homered in the second inning to right field putting Lake Elsinore up 4-2, and they never looked back. Suwinski has been in a slump, but slugged his fifth home run on Friday and went 2-for-4 on the night. He could be coming out of his slumber with the bat. The Storm recorded 10 hits on the night, three of which came from leadoff hitter Allen Cordoba. He played third base for Lake Elsinore and is holding a .702 OPS in the Cal League so far this year. Fred Schlichtholz earned his first save of the year.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (34-36) Lost 6-3
Ryan Weathers was knocked around a bit by the Loons on Friday as he allowed four earned runs in three innings pitched. He took the loss and is 2-2 on the season now with a 3.64 ERA. Alberth Martinez relieved the lefty and went three innings, allowing one earned run on three hits. Austin Smith pitched the last two frames, striking out one without allowing a hit. Agustin Ruiz collected three of the TinCaps six hits in their 6-3 loss on Friday. The Mexican left-handed hitting outfielder is becoming a relevant prospect. Blake Hunt went 1-for-3, and Luis Roman went 1-for-2 in the loss.

Tri-City Dust Devils (3-5) Lost 5-3
2019 10th round pick Ethan Elliott made a start in Tri-City, debuting with a scoreless frame. He struck out two and allowed one hit in his professional debut with the Padres. Ignacio Feliz came in for Elliott and pitched four innings allowing three earned runs. Tom Colletti earned the loss throwing the last two innings of the game allowing two earned runs while striking out four. Jonny Hamza got two hits for Tri-City, and Matthew Acosta drove in a run and has a .948 OPS for the Dust Devils. Mason House continues to struggle, going 0-for-4 with four strikeouts.

AZL Padres 1 (3-1) Lost 8-3
Left-handed pitcher Andrew Dean made his professional debut on Friday pitching a perfect inning in the desert. The 18th round pick out of the University of Illinois is 22-years-old and will be given a chance to throw more very soon. Miguel Rondon relieved the pitcher and gave up three earned runs in three innings pitched. CJ Abrams went 1-for-5 in the loss but still has a 1.392 OPS in Peoria. 2019 19th round pick Chris Givin went 2-for 4 in the game and has a .950 OPS so far.

AZL Padres 2 (1-3) Won 8-6
The AZL Padres got their first win of the year on Friday as the team beat the AZL Cubs 1 team by the score of 8-6. Eudi Asencio started the game and went three innings for the Padres. The 20-year-old Dominican pitcher walked four and struck out two in his appearance. 25th round pick Blake Baker pitched an inning and allowed a run in his professional debut. The 6-foot-3 right-handed pitcher from Miami Dade C.C. is 20 years old and has a decent arm. 18-year-old Venezuelan outfielder Angel Solarte is a very nice young player. The right-handed hitter has a .897 OPS so far in the desert after a 3-for-5 game on Friday.

21-year-old Jesus Lugo was on the mound for the DSL team. The right-handed pitcher is not considered a prospect, but he did go five innings allowing one earned run on six hits. Elias Batista relieved him and blew the game allowing two earned runs in an innings of work. Jonfy Diaz got the loss for the DSL team allowing one earned run in the last two innings of the game. Wilmert Paula homered and looks good so far in the DSL. He has put up a .783 OPS which is pretty impressive for a 17-year-old. Catcher Andelson Arias homered for the team in the eighth, but they could not come back against the DSL Reds.
