Padres Down on The Farm: June 13 (Urias & France homer/Storm win big)

The Padres’ minor league affiliates went 2-3 on the day.
Here’s a recap of what happened.
El Paso Chihuahuas (42-24 on the season) Lost 7-6
After winning in a close 10-9 game against the New Orleans Baby Cakes Wednesday, the Chihuahuas played another back-and-forth ballgame Thursday night, but not in their favor. Things looked good early for El Paso as Luis Urias hit his 15th home run in the top of the first, giving them a 1-0 lead. Jose Pirela made it 2-0 when he scored on a throwing error following his first triple of the season. The lead didn’t last long though as El Paso’s starter Dillion Overton gave up a two-run homer in the second inning then three doubles in the third, giving New Orleans a comfortable 6-2 lead. Urias, Michael Gettys, and Ty France all enjoyed the long ball, adding to the team home run total of 142. They also lead the California league with 691 hits as a team. Despite giving up six early runs, the Chihuahuas bullpen only allowed one earned run through six innings, but New Orleans took game two with a 7-6 victory.

Amarillo Sod Poodles (31-33 on the season) Lost 10-8
The Sod Poodles dropped to two games under .500 after a tough loss against the Naturals. Going into the matchup, the Sod Poodles were only 0.5 games behind the first place Midland Rockhounds, and now sit just one game back from first place but fourth in the division. Coming off a solid previous pitching performance against Corpus Christi where he threw six innings allowing just two hits against, Ronald Bolaños didn’t have a favorable result this time around. After walking the first batter, the 22-year-old gave up a pair of RBI singles followed by a home run, quickly finding himself in a 5-0 hole to start the game. Boloñas’ struggles continued as he surrendered another home run to Meibrys Viloria in the third, giving Northwestern Arkansas an 8-2 advantage. Amarillo got two runs back in the bottom half of the innings after Kyle Overstreet knocked his third homer of the season. Sod Poodle bats were quiet until the bottom of ninth when Amarillo got three runs back thanks to an RBI double by Owen Miller (14) and a pair of sac flies, but it wasn’t enough, as Amarillo lost 10-8 in the rubber match. Bolaños ended the night with eight earned runs, raising his ERA from 1.15 to 9.00.

Lake Elsinore Storm (33-32 on the season) Won 14-8
Lake Elsinore bounced back from Wednesday’s loss where they committed five errors by outscoring the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 14-8 and getting over .500. The Storm started hitting early in this one as Allen Cordoba doubled to center field on just the second pitch of the game, eventually scoring via sac-fly, making it 1-0. In the second inning, Elsinore added another run after Aldemar Burgos hit a tw0-run home run, his first of the season. On the flip side, Rancho Cucamonga’s offense responded in the third and fourth innings, scoring four and making the game 4-4 at that point. Lake Elsinore counteracted those runs by putting nine more on the board through the fifth and sixth innings. Seven singles, an RBI double by Luis Campusano (15), and an RBI triple by Olivier Basabe gave the Storm a comfortable 13-5 lead going into later innings. Starter Caleb Boushley went six innings, allowing four earned runs while also striking out a season-high seven hitters.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (31-34 on the season) Won 8-3
The last time the TinCaps were a .500 club was May 30th. They are slowly getting back to that mark after a win Thursday night over the Bowling Green Hot Rods. Both teams’ offense was present through the matchup but the inability of Bowling Green to knock in its baserunners ultimately gave the TinCaps an easy victory. The Hot Rods were 4-19 with runners in scoring position while Fort Wayne went 4-10 in the same category while collecting nine hits. Two of those came from shortstop Xavier Edwards, who’s continued his successful season at the plate. The 19-year-old leads the Midwest League with his .347 batting average and is currently second in OBP. Fort Wayne’s starter Ramon Perez went four full innings striking out four hitters. He turned things around Thursday allowing one earned run, compared to a combined 16 in his three previous starts.

DSL Padres (6-5 on the season) Lost 7-8
The Dominican Summer League Padres lost Thursday at the expense of the DSL D-Backs after a lack of early proved costly runs for the Padres as it came back to bite them. The D-Backs got on the board first 3-0 by scoring one in the fourth and two in the fifth inning. Padres came back from there by scoring unloading and scoring five in the sixth inning taking the lead 5-3. D-Backs responded by tallying five more runs late to reclaim the lead 8-5. The Pads would score two more runs through the eighth and ninth due to an error and a single but fell short 8-7.
