The San Diego Padres announced the return of two bats to its roster Tuesday afternoon. Wil Myers and Luke Voit are returning from the injured list and will look to add some spark to a struggling San Diego lineup. In order to clear roster spots for the two, the Padres sent C.J. Abrams to Triple-A El Paso and designated Trayce Thompson for assignment.

Voit last played on April 22 after suffering an injury to his bicep tendon, and Myers last played on April 26 while dealing with an injury to his right thumb.

Neither player went on the injured list hitting well. Both sluggers are yet to hit a home run in 2022, and Myers’ .218 batting average is low for his standards, yet he is running laps around Voit’s .143 average. Voit has shown impressive plate discipline, however, as he is getting on base at a .315 clip.

Abrams getting sent down might be somewhat disappointing to Padres fans who awaited the highly touted prospect’s debut. However, he struggled to settle in like much of the lineup, hitting .182 with just one home run across 55 at-bats in 20 games with the big league club. His fielding looked great at shortstop and second base, but he can now get regular at-bats in the minor leagues, something Abrams only got for a short amount of time in 2021 before missing the second half of the year.

Abrams shouldn’t be in the minor leagues very long, either, and this allows Ha-Seong Kim to step into an everyday role at shortstop.

Voit and Myers are in the lineup Tuesday night as the Padres take on the Chicago Cubs and left-handed pitcher Wade Miley. The San Diego lineup desperately needs some reinforcements, and Padres head coach Bob Melvin is hoping those two can give this offense a much-needed spark at the plate.
