The San Diego Padres traded away fan-favorite Franmil Reyes, as well as Logan Allen for a highly regarded centerfield prospect in a three-team trade with the Reds and Indians.

The San Diego Padres made their first trade before the trade deadline as they were involved in a three-way trade with the Reds, and Indians. The Padres traded Franmil Reyes, Logan Allen and infield prospect Victor Nova the Indians and received top prospect, centerfielder Taylor Trammell from Cincinnati.

Losing Reyes is a big blow both on the field and in the clubhouse.

The Dominican outfielder is and outgoing, boisterous, and fun-loving player. He has been seen many times, on social media, leading the team in song and dance before a game. His personality will be greatly missed around the clubhouse. The right-handed hitters’ power bat will be missed as well, as the 27 home runs and .282 ISO prove that he has a ton of power in his bat. A slash line of .253/.312 /.535 showed a player that, while sometimes lacking consistency, had massive potential as a power hitter. However, his defense leaves a lot to be desired as a -9 Defensive Runs Saved and 0.0 UZR make him the perfect fit as a designated hitter.

22-year-old Logan Allen made headlines with a major league debut that involved a one-dollar bet with wrestler John Cena. Despite a stellar first start, his successive outings were worse and worse until Allen was demoted to the bullpen and finally back to Triple-A El Paso after posting a 2-3 record with a 6.75 ERA and 1.77 WHIP in the majors. Allen’s stock was trending downward, but he is far from being labeled a bust. The Padres are overflowing with young pitching talent and, with the current logjam of pitchers, Allen was deemed surplus to requirements.

Victor Nova is a 19-year-old infielder that signed as a free agent on April 26th, 2017. Nova has been playing well in Arizona at the  Rookie Ball level for the Padres. He is slashing .330/.421/.451.  He has seven steals on nine attempts, but power is not his strong suit as he has one home run in 91 at-bats.

San Diego’s prize in the trade is Trammell, a 21-year-old centerfield prospect ranked 30th on MLB Pipeline’s rankings and was the number one prospect in the Reds’ organization. The left-hander was selected in the competitive balance round of the 2016 MLB Draft. Trammel is slumping this season at Double-A Chattanooga, hitting just .236/.350/.338 in 314 at-bats, but many in the industry aren’t discouraged by the slow start.

His speed makes him a rangy outfielder and a stolen base threat with 17 this year for Chattanooga, but some have questioned his arm strength. He has a smooth left-handed swing and is projected to be an on-base machine that should steal bases and score runs. For now, he is an above-average four-tool player with the ability to add the arm strength to be five. With time and proper development, he could be the center fielder of the future for San Diego.

The Padres did lose a great locker room guy in Franmil Reyes. His personality is bigger than life, and everyone in the clubhouse admired him. However, the Padres had and arguably still have a surplus of Major League ready outfielders as well as starting pitchers. Travis Jankowski is prepared to return while Josh Naylor remains in Triple-A El Paso. The trade also cleared two players off the 40-man roster. For now, the Padres gave up surplus players for a top centerfield prospect that may be ready as early as 2020.

  1. Adding more irony to this perplexing and vexing trade, Josh VanMeter will likely replace Puig in the Reds OF.

You may not remember, but he was traded for Luis Torrens. Now is has more WAR (1.0) in 75 AB’s (and an .950 OPS!) than the whole right side of the Padres IF.

Not merely because of this, but I predict the Reds will most certainly makes the WC race interesting, if not make the playoffs.

    1. We will see how things turn out but the Padres really seem to be undervaluing Reyes. 40 HR hitters don’t grow on trees even in the present environment and that is what Reyes is on pace for.

  2. As the news trickled out, everyone was waiting to see what else the Padres (or Reds) received, but it was the Indians that kept adding extra players in this trade! Five in all!

Now they have yet another corner OF/left-field-ONLY player, who clearly isn’t even ready yet, and is as close to the Mendoza line as Chula Vista is to the boarder. AND they gave up a lot, just to get one AA player.

  3. Good with it. LH stick with tools and speed to compete with Franchy for 2020 OF spot. Was Franmil really in the long term plans? He’s was a Byrnes guy and was unprotected just two seasons ago and no one took him. Logan Allen has been passed up by at least 4 arms and could be more with Avila and Diaz. There is risk but worth it to address the largest area of need with surplus pieces.
