Mark Loretta interviews for Padres’ managerial position

According to Jon Heyman, Mark Loretta has interviewed for the San Diego Padres’ managerial position.

There have been two names of recent that have emerged as favorites to be the next manager of the San Diego Padres.

Jayce Tingler and Ron Washington both have ties to the Texas Rangers organization, and they looked to be the final candidates for the Padres managerial job. Things have changed.

There are some rumors that the front office is torn between the two men for the job, The franchise is at a stalemate. Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reported on Wednesday that Tingler is the front runner, and Washington has now fallen out of the race.

Since the team has not reached a unanimous choice to lead this team for 2020 and beyond, the Padres seem to have refocused their efforts on interviewing potential new decisions.

Mark Loretta is a name the Padres are very familiar with, and he has now emerged as a possible candidate. Jon Heyman is reporting that the Padres interviewed Loretta recently and that the managerial job is still considered open.

Loretta played for the Padres for three years, posting a .314/.377/.438 batting line in 413 games. He was an All-Star in 2004, where he hit .335 for the team and put up a .886 OPS for the Padres. He was traded to Boston and ended his career after 15 total seasons.

The infielder is a well-decorated player who is respected in the community. In 2010, Loretta joined the front office for the Padres as a special assistant to the baseball operations team. He has familiarity with the front office and with Padres’ ownership.

He spent the 2019 season as the bench coach for the Chicago Cubs. He has minimal managerial experience, and that could be a factor when it is all said and done. The 48-year-old did manage Team Isreal in the 2013 WBC qualifiers.

The fact the Padres are still looking indicates that they are doing their due diligence. This is an essential hire for the team, and they want to make sure they take a look at all options. Mark Loretta is the latest to interview for the job, and there could be a few more before this is resolved.

  1. Wish “all their options” was completly true. They shut the door on showalter before it even opened. He seemed like he would be a good fit, being experienced, speaks spanish and was pretty balanced and open minded as far as analytics. Should have at least gave him an interview.
