Taking a look at the teenage talent within the San Diego Padres system.

It is no secret that the San Diego Padres have a deep system.

The franchise is presently moving some prospects in trades as they improve the major league team. Their top farm team status may be in jeopardy. But do not worry, there are literally 40-50 teenagers in the system who are close to or have already achieved significant prospect status.

The Padres are loaded with teenage talent.

Have a look for yourself.

16-year-old prospects

Reginald Preciado– (INF) Born: 05/16/2003

The talented infielder from Panama has excellent size (6-foot-4) and is showing a plus bat at a very young age. He is consistently barreling up fastballs in the backfields, where he shows excellent extension and developing power. He is a solid defender who has a real shot at staying at the shortstop position moving forward.

Luis Gutierrez- (LHP) Born: 07/31/2003

Armed with two definite offspeed pitches (changeup and curve), this young pitcher has time to develop into a very nice find for the Padres. He shows plus control presently, and though he will not light up radar guns, there is time for him to add velocity. His mechanics are very clean, and he repeats his motion easily.

Zayed Salinas– (LHP/OF) Born: 2003

At 16, Salinas’ future has yet to be determined, though most indicate he will surely pitch at the higher levels of the minors. He has a terrific fastball that is toughing 90 mph on the radar gun. The left-handed swinger is smooth with a balanced stroke. There is some talk of him possibly playing both ways. We will see how that develops in time.

Others signed 07/02/2019, who are 16 or 17 years of age. Little to no information is known about these youngsters.

Jose Cordero, OF, Dominican Republic — $625,000
Oswaldo Linares, C, Venezuela — $550,000
Carlos Rodriguez, C, Venezuela — $550,000

17-year-old prospects

Ismael Mena– (OF) Born: 11/30/2002

This left-handed-hitting outfielder draws comparisons to Gregory Polanco with his style of play. He has a solid swing with plus speed that will transition well to the upper minors and beyond. He is a solid outfielder with a plus arm and excellent ability.

Eurbiel Angeles- (INF) Born: 05/11/2002

Showing great bat to ball skill at a young age is this young Dominican. The right-handed hitter has plus speed, but not very much power. He will probably be a utility option for the franchise as he can play all over the infield. There is still room for him to grow and possibly develop average power.

Brayan Medina– (RHP) Born: 10/06/2002

The power-pitching right-hander is already throwing in the mid-90s with his fastball. He has very good size (long and lean body) and decent mechanics and could eventually be a top prospect within the system. He also throws a decent changeup along with a slider that is showing promise.

Reginald Dowston– (OF) Born: 06/28/2002

Right-handed power-hitter Reginald Dowston slugged six homers and drove in 27 runs in the DSL for the Padres last year. He also struck out 67 times in 156 at-bats. There is some upside here, but he will need to shorten up the swing to be considered a serious prospect. Dowston brings speed to the table and is a developing defender.

Eduard Hidalgo– (OF) Born: 05/25/2002

The left-handed-hitting Hidalgo is a prospect worth keeping an eye on in the system. He has a pretty swing and is showing a decent approach at the plate at a young age. The outfielder put up a .418 on-base percentage last year in the DSL in 38 games. Hidalgo can play all three outfield spots as he has plus speed but might be better suited for a corner outfield spot when it is all said and done.

Albert Fabian- (1B/OF) Born: 12/21/2001

This left-handed hitter has a smooth swing and put up a .743 OPS in 41 games in the DSL last season. His .361 on-base percentage was a positive sign for this young Dominican. He can play first base and corner outfield where he looks to be productive.

Josttin Diaz- (INF) Born: 05/18/2002

Flexibility is an attribute for this young Dominican. He can play all over the infield, though shortstop may be a stretch. He is a switch-hitter with decent size (6-foot-0) and average speed. There is some power, but he has a long way to go with his swing.

Neifi Antunez (INF/OF) Born: 04/21/2002

There is little power in his bat, but he does have some contact skills with his right-handed swing. The Venezuelan can play all over the diamond, which is extremely useful to the Padres. He put up a .398 on-base percentage last season in the DSL in 29 games. His .738 OPS should dictate he get a look in Arizona this summer.

Nerwilian Cedeno– (INF) Born: 03/16/2002

This switch-hitter only hit .193 last year in 47 games and 166 at-bats. The Venezuelan did, however, record a .352 on-base percentage as he walked 40 times. There are some positives to his swing, but he does need to make better contact, especially if he is going to show little to no power.

Alex Ramirez- (C) Born: 01/06/2002

5-foot-9 right-handed swinging Alex Ramirez is making a name for himself in a system full of catching depth. He has power in his swing as he blasted four homers and drove in 21 runs in 41 games and 150 at-bats last season in the DSL. He has an aggressive swing, which will need to be refined a bit.

Jessel Soto- (RHP) Born: 01/20/2002

This young pitcher from Venezuela has excellent size at 6-foot-4. He is still growing into his lean body and will need time to develop. Soto did record a 2.12 ERA in 29.2 innings pitched for the DSL Padres this past season.

  1. Mr.dodge is right we need to be patient .stop trading guys like turner away .pods have called up alot of young talent,so have the cubs ,dodgers.rizzo was a padre.i believe that its more as bout the owners being patient .but if you want betts ,you will hsve to give up a yates and hosmer salary to sign him.maybe move richards to the pen and let castillo start.there are a few guys still ou th there.is cashner still available.

  2. It’s nice to see such a young crop of talent coming up… But seriously, we’ve been talking about prospects their talents for years now. When is SOMEONE (homegrown) gonna stick???

    1. I could not agree with you more. All we have heard the past few seasons is prospects and the best farm system in the major leagues. Where is the hitting? We traded away 60 plus home runs. For what? We traded away a young second baseball for another 213 hitter
San Diego get ready for a 75 win season with the pitching staff you currently have.

    2. Tatis stuck.
      Paddack stuck.
      Luchessi stuck.
      Lamet stuck.
Reyes stuck and helped us get Trammell.
      Munoz stuck.
Quantrill, Baez, Naylor, France, Bednar, Bolanos, and possibly Gore and Patino are all positioned to produce next year.

Prospects are a numbers game. You need 10 good ones to yield 1 good major leaguer. Not sure where people get their expectations.

  3. Love reading about the young talented Padres! Keep the pipeline going! Credit to the GREAT scouts who, while behind the scenes, are making the organization better every day! Keep working young Padres! You will be in the Big League soon!

      1. James,
What ever happened to a young pitcher named Partida? I dont see him listed in any of your prospect lists, but it seems like he had a lot of promise at one time.

        1. He was hurt all of last year… I like him very much. I probably should have included the 19-year-old left-handed pitcher. Good call.
