It is being reported that Franmil Reyes and Logan Allen have been traded to the Cleveland Indians in a three-team trade.

The San Diego Padres have reportedly dealt Logan Allen and Franmil Reyes in a trade that would ultimately net the team the #30 overall prospect in baseball, Taylor Trammel.

Trammel was a first-round pick in 2016 and currently playing at the Double-A level.

Here is a look at the trade. It is not completely official yet

The Padres are taking a pretty big risk in dealing Franmil Reyes who was loved by the fans.

Trammell brings a left-handed bat and potential centerfielder of the future, but it was a hefty price to pay.

  1. I think this is a very good trade for the padres. Franmil has the big pop for sure, big personality, controllability, but….. I hv to admit his D is… hmm what’s the best way to put it.. when he makes a play on a basic pop up where he’d hv to move a little, he made it look like a spectacular play due to the effort it took for him to get there. Singles hit his way where constantly being turned into a doubles, doubles into triples. To be honest I don’t see that changing for the big guy. If he drops 25 lbs, and that’s a huge if, to become a better defensive player what happens to the power profile?
Concerning personality, like his power it will b missed for sure. The Pads hv a lot of young guys coming up, and I believe their youthful enthusiasm will keep the good vibes rolling.
Concerning controllability, we hv so many players with controllability.. not too concerned.
Comparing all of this directly to Trammel, he has from what I can tell by the Futures interviews a great personality. He is a top prospect so there is a lot too like, and I do believe it puts pressure on Margot which adds to the competition (although we will have to wait in till spring training to see it)
Bottom line, we traded one great big power guy, a lefty pitcher ( we hv like 10 or 20 more) and a 3rd basemen from the rookie league ( we hv probably 15 minor leaguers and manny) for another great tools guy, primed and ready (played in 2 futures game winning an MVP in one) for a Major league invite sooner rather than later. I really believe he will b a sept call up similar to Mejia.
AT has a much higher ceiling , controllability, lefty bat, better outfield potential

Like Yates , Franmil and Logan Allen’s value is at an all time high. Cashing in now on a couple of guys for the future will always b a recipe for success. We are starting to see many of these players make their way up to the bigs this year.
    Stoked for the Padres!!

  2. To be honest…..just seems like same old Padres. Playing for “next year”.
Or in this case…..2022???? Trammell doesn’t help us now, next year or even 2021.
To sum it up….we traded a top 100 prospect, and a proven MLB power bat for a guy that can’t hit AA pitching. Seems about right.
Kind of reminds me of last year with the Brad Hand trade…..lets get rid of an a young dominant closer (under team control for 3 more years!!!!) and an effective middle relief pitcher for a catcher that can’t hit Major League pitching or field his position….AWESOME!!!!
Does the Cleveland front office have polaroids of AJ and the Padres front office doing something wrong????
Going back to the Joe Carter trade in the ealy 90’s to now…..I think we’ve done the Indians a favor at least 4 times in trades. You know….franchise altering trades…..in favor of Cleveland big time!!
The math doesn’t add up at all.
Anyone who thinks the Padres wouldn’t have a winning record right now if the Hand trade wasn’t made…..please feel free to speak up.
Further…..how do you keep Will “Head Case” Myers on this roster and lose the great chemistry that Franmil brought???
Myers strikes out over 40% of the time, has dropped 3 fly balls THIS YEAR, stopped running on a stolen base attempt and looks bored most of the time!!! Yep…..seems like a winning player to me!
Talk about analytics all you want…..not considering the human factor in your “Team Building” is a colossal blunder!!! And I mean epic!!!!

  3. Interesting move. We’re back to having Myers in LF, which might not be so bad. Reyes is a big liability in the field, and Myers is the only corner OF on the roster who could have made that running catch in the Paddack win. Perhaps Preller is finally valuing defense?
Or are they simply high on Trammell and concerned about Reyes’ defense and conditioning issues?
Trammell is a pretty good prospect, but in giving up Reyes, Allen and Nova for him, it might be there were 40 man roster considerations at play here as well.
    Are they done?
If they are, this opens an OF spot for either Cordero or Jankowski.

    1. Let’s not forget that Margot was rated similarly, if not better, at a similar point. And that turned into a dud. At least Margot can play CF. Trammell is a lesser version of Margot who can’t play CF, and, even if everything goes right, is a couple of years away from helping.

  4. A potential top of the order left handed hitting CFer to balance the lineup for a power hitting DH moonlighting as a RFer? Seems like an alright deal to me. I would say that the DH will not be coming to the NL any time soon, seems as though Fowler and Preller knew there as going to be big changes to the International signing structure when the went big a couple of years ago and if the DH was coming to the NL, you would think the Padres would have kept Reyes around. The biggest worry I have is losing Reyes in the clubhouse. He seems like a great guy, but from the little I have seen of Trammell at the last 2 Prospect All Star games, he too could be a very good guy for a clubhouse with a much need left handed bat and speed. a Winner on this deal will not be known for at least a couple of years.

    1. Potential top of the order? Yes. CFer? No. His arm limits him to LF only. The Padres do not need any more corner OF’s. Perhaps he can pull a Tony Gwynn and dramatically strengthen his arm. TG went from a very weak arm to a Gold Glover many times over.

Either way, this is decidedly a move back, at least in the time frame of competing. Just when the Padres were supposedly on the verge, they trade an established player for young potential who is struggling in AA.

Don’t ever let Preller trade with the Indians!!!

No matter what happens with Trammell, the winner is clearly the Indians. This was clearly larceny. They obtained five players: 2 distant and unknown-ish prospects; one stud hitter who is very cheap and controllable, and will likely hit 40 to 50 HR’s for the foreseeable future, one talented headcase who will be gone after this season, and one potential back-end starting pitcher/top 100 prospect. The Reds only get one year of a headcase talented pitcher, and the Pads get a AA left fielder-only with some potential.

      1. So you are positive that Trammell cannot play CF because of his arm, but then mention that Gwynn was able to “dramatically strengthen his arm”? This is not a move back at all. This clears a spot in the OF, which we all know was needed, and adds a top 30 overall prospect to the Padres system. This year was never going to be an “all in year” and seeing the growth of the team so far is encouraging. You can complain about this trade and I can see the potential, but as I said in my earlier post, no one will know how this trade works out for at least a couple of years. I am going to trust Preller and Co., it may come back to haunt me, but it might all take me/us to the promised land. Go Padres!!

        1. It IS a move back, because, at best, they traded current value for future value. So, by definition, this moves back the time line of competing. Yes, with a weak arm he is stuck in left, and yes, my hope is that he can improve his arm, is there something incorrect or wrong with that?

  5. Is this a joke? I hope Puig somehow got hurt in the brawl and the trade is called off.

Harry Dunne to Lloyd Christmas (paraphrase):

Just when I thought you couldn’t any dumber, you go and totally redeem yourself by giving up an established, top line, top of the order hitter who had FIFTY HOME RUNS over the last 162 games, and a starting pitcher, and another guy, for an AA outfielder who apparently won’t stay in center due to his weak arm. That is, even if Trammell ever makes it. Another sad day in Preller/Padres history.

The Indians killed it! Cincy? Well, I guess one year of Bauer (next year, not this) for Puig, Trammell, and some other guy.

The Padres? Maybe the will be truly competive in 2022 or 2023? Thanks AJ!

  6. This trade is a colossal joke. Are you kidding? Preller is a moron. Thanks to him we have an albatross in Will Myers and just gave away one of the most exciting players we have had in 20 years. I cant take this any more. Today agree, has set back the building effort at least several years.

  7. Are you kidding me!? I was afraid of something like this. Preller just added a weaker version of Margot and a little better than Fast Freddy. Preller = Mister Redundant.

6 years of an ok OF (at best) for 5 years of a top OF who is one of the best power hitters in the game + 6 years of an iffy SP + a lower level player with potential.

They kept saying they wanted to compete NOW. This set the timeline back a couple of years.

Just when you thought they were ready to compete AJ makes his move…and now we have to hope he doesn’t make any more moves. Maybe he will get fired before he does any more damage!

    1. i love franmil, but its a stretch to say it sets them back a few years. They couldnt stay above .500 with him, and I like that they are taking a chance to get someone who could have the almost as much pop, better fielder and has on base and fielding ability, which reyes will never have. The main thing i will miss with reyes is i feel like who was a guy who kind of brought the team together. He is an awesome dude. Well see how trammell does in the minors this year and how margot does the rest of this year, and he will probably start in an outfield spot next year.

      1. Speed and fielding, yes, pop, absolutely not. Margot has far more power than Trammell. You make a great point about his impact on the team.

        1. Scouts say he has power in his bat that just hasn’t been unlocked on the diamond yet; he crushes balls in BP. He has a 45 game power and 55 raw power ranking on Fangraphs (Margot has 40/55 in those respective rankings, Urias 45/35 by comparison).

In reality, the OBP, speed, defense and lefty bat are what we were looking for and he has a high ceiling in all of those categories. We’ll see. I would guess most opinions on the trade are being issued after doing this much research: look up stats, look up prospect ranking. The Padres probably had a lot more information, and liked what they saw in Trammell, hopefully they were right. Franmil is not a great fit on an NL team, but he was the absolute best as a person. Definitely going to miss seeing him play the game.

          1. He likely plays great defense, but can only play left field. A noodle arm keeps him out of center, or right. The Padres have cornered the market on, uh, corner out fielders, and desperately need a CF.

I hope this decision move backwards and delay competing means they will now trade Yates, BUT ONLY IF AJ DOES NOT GET HOSED!

        2. abviously not on the same level as far as pop, but i keep hearing its solid, like 20 homers a year, which to be honest nowadays doesnt seem so crazy.
