The San Diego Padres placed catcher Francisco Mejia on the IL and recalled Austin Allen from Triple-A El Paso.

Francisco Mejia injured an oblique on Wednesday in a game against the Dodgers.

No word yet on the severity of the injury, but oblique injuries can often linger.

The catcher was placed on the IL before Friday’s game in San Francisco. In his place, the Padres have recalled Austin Allen from El Paso.

The left-handed-hitting catcher is 12-for-47 (.255) this year with San Diego and will provide some offensive firepower for a team that has been hurting in that regard.

Allen was having a dynamic year in the PCL, where he put up a .330/.379/.663 batting line with 21 homers and a 1.042 OPS. The catcher, known for his offense, has also improved drastically with his defense.

Mejia was having a great year and establishing himself this year with San Diego.

The switch-hitting catcher currently owns a .263/.315./.439 slash line with a .754 OPS.

There is hope Mejia will return before the end of the season.

Only time will tell in that matter.
