Padres Down on the Farm: July 13 (Scholtens shines for EP/Hassell 3 hits in LE/ DSL Padres rally late)

San Diego Padres affiliates went 3-2 on Tuesday.

Here is a recap of the day’s events.

El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 3-1 to Oklahoma City) (25-33 on the season)

Jesse Scholtens– 6 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 9 K (98 pitches, 70 strikes)

Taylor Kohlwey– (2 for 4), RBI, K, SB

Pedro Florimón- (1 for 3), 2B, BB, K

Ivan Castillo– (2 for 5), R, K

The Chihuahuas offense struggled for the second straight night, this time allowing five Dodger pitchers to combine for nine innings of one-run ball. El Paso left opportunities on the board all night long, going 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position and leaving nine runners on base. A pair of home runs for Dodgers prospect Matt Davidson off Jesse Scholtens was all that Oklahoma City needed. Former Padres prospect Carlos Asuaje drove in the other Dodgers run, all of which were charged to Scholtens.

Taylor Kohlwey continued to swing a hot bat, picking up a pair of hits, including singling home Ivan Castillo for the Chihuahuas only offensive production. Austin Nola continued his rehab assignment with El Paso, and he went 1 for 3 with a walk. He continued to play first base, which he’s done throughout the assignment. The Chihuahuas have scored just one run in their last sixteen innings against the Dodgers. Alex Powers and Steven Wilson didn’t allow a hit in three combined innings of work, but the Dodgers bullpen held firm as well. After going 3 for 3 in Monday’s game, Luis Campusano went hitless and left four runners in his four at-bats in Tuesday’s game.

San Antonio Missions (Lost 4-1 to Corpus Christi) (29-31 on the season)

Aaron Leasher– 5 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER,  3 BB, 2 K (87 pitches, 51 strikes)

Joe Beimel– 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K (20 pitches, 14 strikes)

José Azocar- (1 for 3), R, BB, CS

Ben Ruta– (1 for 3), BB, 2 K, 2 SB

The Missions offense also struggled, picking up just three hits against three Corpus Christi pitchers. They did show good discipline, picking up seven walks in 34 plate appearances, but they went hitless with runners in scoring position, and as a result, left eight runners on base. Aaron Leasher pitched relatively well, allowing just three hits, but a two-run home run and an error doomed him and the Missions to the loss. The 44-year-old Joe Beimel, who’s attempting a comeback with the Missions, pitched two hitless innings in relief, lowering his ERA to 1.50.

The Missions were able to scrape across their only run on an Eguy Rosario sacrifice fly but couldn’t find a big hit when it counted, failing to pick up a single extra-base hit. Corpus Christi added a final run in the bottom of the eighth, and the Missions, who didn’t record a hit in the final six innings, fell to the Hooks in the series opener.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Won 6-2 against West Michigan) (27-33 on the season)

Erik Sabrowski– 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K (75 pitches, 52 strikes)

Jawuan Harris– (1 for 2), 2 R, 2B, HBP, SB

Fort Wayne’s offense exploded late, scoring in each of the final four innings to rally and beat West Michigan. Justin Lopez’s go-ahead home run in the sixth got the scoring started for the TinCaps, and they scored on both a wild pitch and a caught stealing to cement their advantage. The TinCaps rode starter Erik Sabrowski, who pitched well enough to keep Fort Wayne in the game, even while their offense was sputtering in the early innings. Grant Little and Justin Lopez both had three-hit days, while Jawuan Harris found ways to get on and turned it into two runs. Harris’ stolen base was his fifteenth of the season.

The TinCaps got four innings of one-run ball from their bullpen, while West Michigan’s allowed four runs in just three innings. The TinCaps pitching staff, which has been their strength all season long, kept their offense in the game just long enough for the bats to wake up.

Lake Elsinore Storm (Won 14-3 against Visalia) (27-34 on the season)

Nick Thwaits– 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K (86 pitches, 57 strikes)

Jarryd Dale– (4 for 6), 2 R, RBI, K, SB

Robert Hassell III- (3 for 5), 2B, 2 R, RBI, BB, K

Joshua Mears– (1 for 4), HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, BB, K

The Storm played the Visalia Rawhide, who are arguably the worst team in minor league baseball, dropping to 14-47 after the game tonight. The Storm’s offense brought the thunder, picking up 16 hits and plating 14 runners.

The Storm scored 12 runs in the first two innings, and the game was basically over at that point. With the exception of Carlos Luis, every single Storm batter picked up a hit, and Lake Elsinore had 25 total bases on the day. Nick Thwaits finally picked up his first win of the season. After starting out 0-6, the 14 runs of support proved to be enough. Jose Garcia allowed four hits and a run in his only inning out of the bullpen, but the Storm’s pitching held Visalia to just three runs, keeping the game comfortably in hand.

DSL Padres (Won 4-3 vs DSL Blue Jays) (1-1 on the season)

Jose Cordero– (3 for 5), 1 RBI, 1 BB

Samuel Zavala– (1 for 3), R, 2B, 2 K

Axcel Peralta- (1 for 3), RBI, BB

The DSL Padres came from three runs back to beat the Blue Jays 4-3. The Padres picked up one run in the sixth, an RBI infield single by Jose Cordero. They then tied the game with sacrifice flies by Oswaldo Linares and Axcel Peralta. Finally, Victor Acosta broke the deadlock in the eighth with an RBI groundout. All three Blue Jays runs were charged to Bradley Rodriguez, who started the game for the Padres.
