The Peoria Javelinas were off on Friday, preparing for the AFL Championship, which will be Saturday at noon on MLB Network.

The lineup was announced, and as far as Padre players are concerned, only Luis Urias will start the game for Peoria. He will be playing shortstop and batting eighth for the Javelinas.

Josh Naylor will sit the bench, even though the Solar Sox are throwing a right-handed pitcher (Alec Mills) out there to start the game. Red Sox farmhand Michael Chavis will get the start at first instead of Naylor, but you can be sure the big lefty will be utilized in a pinch late in the game.

In Australia, the Padres had three men playing late Thursday night/early Friday morning. As Buddy Reed, Lake Bachar, and Gabriel Arias all played “down under” in the league’s second day of the 2017-18 season.

In the Dominican there was rain, and many teams were unable to play.

Here is a roundup of the rest of the farmhands and what they did on Friday.

AUSTRALIAN/MEXICAN/DOMINICAN/VENEZUELAN WINTER LEAGUES

Buddy Reed was 2-4 with a walk and a strikeout in his second game in the Australian Baseball League. He played center and batted leadoff for the Cavalry, and is hitting .429 early in the season.

Rafael Ortega was 2-5 with a triple, three RBI, and a strikeout. The outfielder is hitting .303 so far in the winter.

Fernando Perez played second base again on Friday in Mexico, and went 2-5 with a double, a run, and a strikeout. He is hitting .327 on the year.

Gabriel Arias was 0-4 with four strikeouts on Thursday. The slick-fielding shortstop did make a great play (video below) and is hitting .125 in his first two games. The golden sombrero (four K’s) is a bit concerning, but he is 17 and playing halfway around the world.

Jose Rondon was 0-4 with two strikeouts, as the shortstop has struggled with the bat so far. He is hitting .188 on the year in four games for his Venezuelan team.

Lake Bachar pitched his first game in Australia and allowed one earned run and two hits in four innings of work. He walked three batters and struck out four in his 76-pitch effort.

Cesar Vargas threw in Mexico on Friday, lowering his ERA to 3.58 for the year after 1.1 scoreless innings.
