Down on the Farm: September 2- Tatis with Four Hits, Morejon, Ramirez & Scheckler Solid

The San Diego Padres affiliates were 3-4 on Saturday.
The El Paso Chihuahuas won 8-1, as their playoff hopes are still in full swing. Dillon Overton, who was DFA’d a few days ago and re-signed after clearing waivers, was pretty effective throwing for El Paso. The lefty went six strong innings, striking out four and only allowing one earned run. A special Happy Birthday to Franchy Cordero, who went 2-5 with a pair of doubles for his cumple anos. The Chihuahuas had 14 hits on the night, as five different players completed a multi-hit game. Hunter Renfroe went 3-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
San Antonio got huge performances from their young offensive players as Fernando Tatis, Josh Naylor, and Luis Urias went a combined 9-14 with four RBI in the 6-3 victory. The youth movement is in full swing and the San Diego Padres are certainly excited about that. Brett Kennedy was solid, going six strong innings and only allowing one earned run. Brad Wieck came out to record the final three outs, recording his seventh save of the season by pitching a perfect inning. San Antonio is positioning themselves for the Texas League playoffs, which start very soon.
The Storm held on to win 4-3 over Rancho Cucamonga in 10 innings. Rod Boykin scored on a ground out in the top of the 10th. The speedy outfielder has been very productive in Lake Elsinore as he went 2-4 on the night and scored two runs. He is hitting .313 now on the season. Emmanuel Ramirez was nasty on Saturday, as the right-handed pitcher from the Dominican Republic struck out 11 batters in his eight innings of baseball. Ramirez did not earn the win, as it went to Trevor Frank, who pitched a scoreless ninth. Colby Blueberg earned his 1oth save of the year after pitching a perfect 10th inning for the Padres.
Fort Wayne had Adrian Morejon on the mound and the lefty was pretty decent throwing in the rain. He went five innings, allowing one earned run, and struck out six batters. The game was called in the sixth due to rain. Offensively, the team only managed two hits, while striking out 10 times. The TinCaps officially will have a playoff game next Thursday.
Tri-City lost 2-0 to Vancouver despite a really good start from Ben Sheckler. The 22-year-old left-handed pitcher went eight strong innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits. The 6′ 8″ pitcher struck out eight on the night and lowered his ERA to 2.60 on the season. The story for Tri-City is that they continue to strike out at an alarming pace. The team had 11 K’s on the night as four players (Luis Asuncion, Justin Lopez, Tre Carter, and Chris Mattison) had at least two K’s.
The AZL Padres lost 10-8, despite a quality start from Sam Keating. The first-year pitcher went four innings without allowing an earned run. Jordy Barley had a bad game, going 0-5 with four strikeouts. In fact 14 Padre batters went down by the K, as Dayon Olmo, Jaquez Williams, Esteury Ruiz, and Jonny Hozma each struck out twice. Jeisson Rosario went 3-5 with three RBI and a double.
Ramon Perez pitched well, but the AZL Padres 2 team lost 2-0. The 18-year-old left-handed pitcher from Cuba has very decent potential. His ERA is now 2.66 on the season as he establishes himself in his first professional season. The Padres were unable to get anything going offensively on Saturday as the team only managed six hits. Justin Paulsen recorded two of the hits, but was stranded both times.
