Down on the Farm: May 14 (Gore Makes Third Start, Storm Have Big Night on Offense)

Minor league affiliates of the San Diego Padres went 3-1 on May 14.

Here is a recap of the day’s events:

El Paso Chihuahuas (20-19) won 6-3

The Chihuahuas defeated the Reno Aces 6-3 to end a three-game skid. Allen Craig had a three-hit night, including his fifth home run of the season. Luis Urias had two hits and reached base three times. He hit an RBI-single in the ninth inning.

Walker Lockett pitched six-and-a-third innings, giving up just two runs. He struck out five while allowing two walks and seven hits. He picked up the win for his second of the season. Trey Wingenter pitched two-thirds of an inning, allowing a hit.

San Antonio Missions (25-12) lose 2-1

Kyle Overstreet hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning, but it wasn’t enough. The Missions lost 2-1 to the Corpus Christi Hooks. Fernando Tatis, Jr. went 0-for-3 in the game. Miguel Diaz pitched well over four innings, striking out six. His one mistake was a two-run home run hit by Corpus Christi’s Taylor Jones in the fourth inning.

Lake Elsinore Storm (16-22) win 9-1

The Storm defeated the Modesto Nuts 9-1 for their third straight win. Reggie Lawson pitched seven strong innings, allowing a run on three hits. He walked three and struck out three, while his ERA sits at 1.95.

Buddy Reed led the offense with three hits and three RBI. Jorge Ona hit his third home run of the season and finished the game with two hits. Eguy Rosario and Luis Torrens also had two hits. That was the good from the Storm offense tonight. As for the bad, they struck out 13 times.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (15-21) win 5-3

The TinCaps snapped a four-game losing streak with a 5-3 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps. Mackenzie Gore made his third start for Fort Wayne, allowing three runs off six hits over three innings pitched. He struck out three and gave up a home run, but didn’t allow any walks.

Esteury Ruiz went 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. He brings his batting average up to .274, the second highest on the team, behind Jeisson Rosario (.277). Luis Campusano and Justin Lopez also had two hits.
