Down on the Farm: August 27 (Naylor Homers, Gabriel Arias hits for Cycle, & Tri-City puts up 13 Runs)

The San Diego Padres’ affiliates were 5-2 on Monday.

Here is a recap of the day’s action:

El Paso Chihuahuas (79-53) Won 1-0

Left-handed pitching prospect Logan Allen continues to dominate in 2018, as he went five shutout innings on Monday. His ERA is at 0.82 so far in Triple-A. The hurler has wasted no time establishing himself. He could be a very special arm and is still only 21, which is amazing. The bullpen for the Chihuahuas held off the Rainiers as Kaz Makita, Carter Capps, and Rowan Wick each had scoreless appearances. Ty France was the hitting star with three hits and Shane Peterson drove in the only run for El Paso. Francisco Mejia had the game off.

Kazuhisa Makita– 2 IP, 2 H, K (21 pitches- 15 strikes)

Logan Allen– 5 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 3 K (92 pitches- 57 strikes)

San Antonio Missions  (70-61) Won 5-0

Chris Huffman and Gerardo Reyes combined on a two-hit shutout of the Corpus Christi Hooks. Huffman went seven solid innings, striking out seven on the night. His ERA is down to 3.09 on the year for the Missions. Josh Naylor slugged his 16th homer of the year in the win and Michael Gettys hit his 15th of the year. Buddy Reed went 0-for-4 with two K’s as he continues to struggle in Texas (.149 batting average).

Lake Elsinore Storm  (63-70)  Lost 6-3

Bryan Mitchell was on the mound for the Storm on Monday and he allowed four earned runs for the loss. He did strike out five, but was victimized in the fourth and fifth innings as he allowed five runs to cross the plate. Offensively, Lake Elsinore was led by Edward Olivares, who went 2-for-4 with his 11th homer of the year.

Fort Wayne TinCaps  (62-70)  Won 15-5

The TinCaps totaled 18 hits and 15 runs in their beatdown of the South Bend Cubs on Monday. Shortstop Gabriel Arias hit for the cycle and drove in five runs on the night. Owen Miller recorded four hits and Jack Suwinski went 3-for-6. Both Esteury Ruiz and Jeisson Rosario went 2-for-4 for the TinCaps. Ryan Weathers got the start and went 2.2 innings, striking out five in the game without allowing an earned run. He was followed by Gabe Mosser, who threw 4.1 scoreless innings.  Not every player had a great offensive night, as Jalen Washington and Kelvin Melean both went hitless in the win.

Tri-City Dust Devils  (33-36) Won 13-0

The Dust Devils went off on Monday as they scored 13 runs on 20 hits in a shutout of the Emeralds. Manny Guzman, Spencer Kulman, Jordan Guerrero, and Joe Galindo combined on the six-hit shutout. Tucupita Marcano, Xavier Edwards, and Tre Carter all had three hits on the night. Blake Hunt, Michael Curry, and Luis Asuncion all recorded two knocks as every Dust Devil hitter got a hit on the night. Justin Paulsen has a great game going 2-for-5 with his third homer of the season.

AZL Padres 1  (27-29) Won 8-2

The Padres 15th round pick from June, Nick Thwaits, got the start in Peoria for the AZL Padres 1 team. The right-handed pitcher went three innings without allowing an earned run. His ERA is 2.42 on the year now in the desert. Tyler Mortenson followed Thwaits and went three scoreless innings, striking out five. The Padres totaled eight runs on 14 hits. Yerry Landinez and Jawuan Harris both got three hits and two other Padres’ players recorded two hits a piece. Luis Almanzar continues to struggle as he went 0-for-6 and is hitting .211 on the season.

AZL Padres 2  (26-30) Lost 2-1

14 strikeouts were an issue for the offense as they could not get anything going. Mason House went 1-for-4 with three K’s, as he continues to struggle making contact. Payton Smith and Jarryd Dale also stuck out three timers in the game for the Padres. 17-year-old Frank Lopez got the start and was very effective in 3.1 innings pitched. Dominic Taccolini, Felix Minjarez, and Trent Shelton finished off the game. A ninth inning walkoff run off of Shelton by the Rangers was the difference in the ballgame.

James,on the flip side I am extremely disapointed on how Reed and Potts have performed in SA.I was so excited when both got promoted but they failed to live up to the hype especially Reed.Without Tatis in SA, the team really lacked any star power and have really struggled offensively in his absence.

  2. I know it’s in the early stages of their careers, but Marcano and Edwards seem to be quite the finds for the Padres. It will be fun to watch them move up through the Minors over the next couple of years. You can never have enough quality at the middle infield positions.

    Thanks for the write James. Patrick must be wetting himself with how good Marcano is playing. 🙂
