The Padres farm teams were 2-2 on Thursday.

Here is a recap of the day’s events.

El Paso Chihuahuas (13-7) Won 9-8

In another home run derby of a game played in Las Vegas, El Paso pulled out some late game heroics to pull ahead and seal the deal in the top of the ninth. The game had a total of eight home runs between the two teams including the game winner in the top of the ninth by El Paso right fielder Jacob Scavuzzo, his second of the game. Logan Allen failed to get out of the second inning and the pen continued a rough stretch in Las Vegas. Luckily, the offense keeps churning along and keeping the team in games just like these.

Logan Allen – 1 2/3 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 K, 3 HR

Luis Urias – (1-for-5) HR

Michael Gettys – (2-for-5) HR, 5 RBI

Jacob Scavuzzo – (2-for-4) 2 HR, 1 BB

Matthew Batten – (3-for-4) 2 R

Alex Dickerson – (1-for-4) 1 HR, 1BB

Josh Naylor – (2-for-4) 1 BB

Amarillo Sod Poodles (9-12) Lost 0-8

To say that Emmanuel Ramirez had a rough first inning would be an understatement, with 40 pitches getting him through two-thirds of an inning to lead off the game. Giving up two hits, four earned runs, two walks, and a HBP. The offense had plenty of opportunities to score with eleven base runners throughout the course of the game but not a single time had the ability to bring one home with a clutch hit. Hudson Potts’s bat continues to come alive with a two hit night and don’t sleep on former Rule 5 pick Luis Torrens. The soon to be 23 year old catcher, is hitting .318 with a .900 OPS across Amarillo’s first 21 games.

Kaz Makita – 3 1/3 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 4 K

Edward Olivares – (2-for-3) 1 BB

Luis Torrens –  (2-for-4)

Hudson Potts – (2-for-4)

Lake Elsinore Storm (10-11) Lost 5-1

After giving up a two-run homer in the top of the first, Luis Patino settled in and ended up completing five full innings, only allowing the two runs with five strikeouts.  It was a nice bounceback performance after the first inning.  Unfortunately, the timely hit was something missing at “The Diamond” tonight for the Storm. Even though they amassed ten hits, they were only able to push across one run on a ninth inning solo home run from first baseman Taylor Kohlwey.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (11-9) Won 12-6

The bats came alive in a big way and scored in five of nine innings played Thursday night.  Getting on the board in the first was a solo home run by Tucapita Marcano. Marcano as well as fellow young hitters Xavier Edwards, Agustin Ruiz, and Dwanya Williams-Sutton all had multi RBI games. Gabe Mosser took the hill for the TinCaps and had his most challenging start yet. No thanks to four errors behind him and a bout of wildness that delivered three walks and a wild pitch. Luckily, the Fort Wayne bullpen was “nails” and finished the game with 4.2 scoreless innings, scattering three hits to go along with six strikeouts.

Gabe Mosser – 5 1/3 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K

Tucapita Marcano – (3-for-4) HR, 3 R, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SB

  1. The PCL is crazy. It is like a slow-pitch softball league. It seems just about everyone on El Paso has a .900 OPS or better. That’s great, but what does this do to the psyche of the pitchers who have to pitch there? This has to make evaluating hitters and pitchers very difficult. Skipping AAA was perhaps part of the impetus in promoting Paddock, etc.
