San Diego Padre affiliates were 2-3 on Wednesday.
Here is a recap of the day’s events.
El Paso Chihuahuas (1-6 record)- Lost 7-5 to Tacoma Rainiers
Logan Allen gave up five earned runs in three innings pitched which put the Chihuahuas behind early in Washington. He had plenty of velocity on the night but struggled with his command. El Paso battled back in the top of the eight to tie the game at five, as Josh Naylor started the inning off with a walk and scored on a Jose Pirela double. The tie did not last long as Sammy Solis gave up a walk-off, two-run homer in the ninth inning off the bat of Shed Long. That was the second baseman’s first homer at the Triple-A level, and it gave Tacoma the 7-5 win. El Paso is off to a 1-6 start and has had issues with their starting pitching. In time, this staff should be able to correct itself.

Amarillo Sod Poodles (2-5 record)- Lost 11-5 to Midland RockHounds
Adrian Morejon was roughed up in the third inning as he allowed five runs to score. The lefty walked three in the inning and hit another batter as he continually gets victimized by one single inning. The Padres are reportedly working with him on these mental lapses. It is just part of the game. He is young, and it appears it will take a little more time for Morejon to develop. He was throwing in the 94-97 mph range on Wednesday, so his health looks to be in check. Amarillo plated their five runs in the last two frames, in a game that they were never in. Owen Miller and Buddy Reed homered. Brad Zunica dropped his OPS to 1.504 with an 0-for-4 game at the plate. David Bednar, Dauris Valdez and Trevor Megill all made scoreless appearances out of the pen. Kaz Makita was roughed up in his inning of work, as the Japanese sidearmed pitcher gave up four earned runs on three hits bringing his ERA to 7.71 on the year.

Lake Elsinore Storm (5-2 record)- *Double Header* Won 10-0 and Lost 8-5 to Lancaster JetHawks
The Storm drubbed the JetHawks in game one of the doubleheader as they got out to a three-run lead in the first and never looked back. The team collected Fourteen hits in the seven-inning contest. Luis Campusano homered, and four other players recorded two hits each. The Storm got a substantial pitching effort from Aaron Leasher and Caleb Boushley. The duo threw the first six shutout innings. Dylan Coleman wrapped up the game with a scoreless seventh.
In game two, the Storm got off to an early lead as Gabriel Arias hit his first home run in the California League. Lake Elsinore plated two more runs in the fourth as Arias struck again with a two-RBI single. The shortstop has had offensive woes, so it is good to see him have a decent game with the bat. Lancaster stormed back in the bottom of the fifth as they took the lead on a two-out single by Luis Castro off of reliever Jean Cosme. The Storm made four errors in the game. Torso Ornelas tripled twice, and Jack Suwinski doubled twice for Lake Elsinore.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (5-2 record)– Won 12-2 over Dayton Dragons
Fort Wayne is having fun and playing as a team. You get a sense by watching this team that they all enjoy each other’s company. They beat Dayton on Wednesday afternoon by the score of 12-2 behind solid hitting and dominant pitching. Ryan Weathers threw six innings for the TinCaps, allowing two earned runs while striking out eight. He was fired up once again and showed great poise on the mound. Fort Wayne recorded 11 hits in the game, as four players had a multiple hit game. The team also walked nine times in the game. Trent Shelton threw the last three innings for the TinCaps and did not allow a hit.
